What are you doing today?

I'm spending the whole of my weekend and half of next week sort of ignoring all of my 4 year old Autistic grandson's bad behaviour.

This follows me making the mistake of allowing both my husband, daughter and grandson to go off on two weeks holiday without me, as I was not feeling too good due to longstanding health issues.

The two weeks holiday spread into three weeks, so it's now Nanny's job to get him back to behaving somewhere near to his own particular normal values before school recommences in two weeks time.

Oh well, if this is the punishment I must endure for a whole 3 weeks at home on my lonesome researching fish and in order to set up my aquarium, it is a price worth paying in my opinion. Roll on Wednesday when I will be taking him back to his own house, with a bit of luck and a following wind.
Your family owes you big time. You are a trooper.

Welp , got up super early and got out on the bike at 7:07 AM , done with the quick 27 miles before 9:00 AM . I beat the heat and the calm of the morning was very welcome after yesterday’s battle with 50 windy miles . Part of my route was along the banks of The Mighty Yellowstone River and the bugs were out in force . I never knew they were morning creatures .
Anyway , that being done I have all the rest of the day to myself . I believe I shall treat myself to a leisurely day of water changes and feeding my aquatic friends . I love aquarium maintenance day . So fun to just look at the fish , smell the water and watch them devour their victuals . About that smelling the water . It’s a very good practice that will alert you to things that may be amiss . Do it if you haven’t been .

Between temper spells from my Autistic grandson on his return from a 3 week holiday, I am on here as usual. Every time I see a species of fish mentioned in a thread, I am off on another tab looking at them to see what they are etc. to expand my knowledge. Jotting down all of the ones that are small and of interest to me, as I only have room in my lounge for small tanks.

@Back in the fold Smelling the water? I'll never be the equal of my dog, but I can detect ammonia in very small percentages. I measured that perception against test kits when I still had test kits. I still have my nose, so I check. We sometimes underestimate the abilities we have.

@Jennet I've been skirting around the edges of watching my autistic nephew while his parents are on vacation, as a fill in, give the main caregiver back up person. The little guy is non verbal. It's quite the task. So, for your breaks:

Oryzias woworae
Tomeurus gracilis
Copella arnoldi
Nothobranchius eggersi
Chromidotilapia guentheri
Aphyosemion ogoense
Betta coccinae
Procatopus nototaenia

That's a smorgasbord of beauties and weirdos.

You bet your boots you can smell that ammonia ! I can . We do underestimate ourselves .

I just went out to pick up a bottle of good quality dark rum, as that is my favourite tipple in an evening. I just came out of the store when two police cars came racing up and screamed to a halt about 50 yards or so from me. 4 officers jumped out and dragged two youngish men to the floor and went about arresting them.

Needing to get back to where I parked my car, and there was a guy just in front of me that was videoing what was taking place with his phone. I walked past and asked one of the policemen what they had done. He answered that someone had just been robbed with a knife. I carried on to my car, but could not go, so went into the pizza shop next to where I parked and ordered a pizza. Whilst waiting for it back in my car I realised that the 2 men must have been picked up from CCTV (it was a High Street) and the police had spotted them from description and pounced.

Now back home with pizza for supper and rum to follow. Happy days 😁

Don’t become a rummy nose! Lol.

Done with all the stuff I had planned for the day and now I’m sitting here looking out the windows and wondering where these ominous dark clouds came from that our local weathermen didn’t even mention . It’s humid and no wind at all . This bodes ill .

Every Friday I perform routine 50% water change on a 60, 29 and 10 gallon tank. Over the weekend I will perform routine water changes in 3, 20 gallon long tanks and 2, 5 gallon tanks which includes a hospital tank and a quarantine tank. Today my pair of P. taeniatus Nigerian Red come out of quarantine. They will occupy a tank accompanied by about 15 N. marginatus. The tank was home to A. cacatuoides that were sold to a local fish shop. It has several coconut caves and is well planted.

You “ perform “ water changes ? Almost sounds like a ballet . I schlep buckets around and “ do “ water changes 🤣 . Thanks for the opening to yank your chain 🤣 .

Now I've finally chosen what fish I want to keep, I am researching more on plants that I think I may be able to keep alive. Going for tissue cultures as some people on here have advised.

I've seen it on youtube. There's opera involved, and powdered wigs, and an obese horse. It really leaves the rest of us looking boring. Think "what water changes" to the tune of "Kill the wabbit".
The swordtail fight at the end is freakin' awesome.
