What are you doing today?

Researching what fish I can now keep in my 80 litre tank now I know my water parameters are soft, not moderately hard. 😜
You are not your average beginning aquarist . Most bumble ahead and do whatever . I doff my cap to you !

You’ve got hydraulic huh ? Is there a lot of maintenance and bleeding the system and stuff ? How does mechanical disc work then without hydraulics ? I do know that disc brakes are way easier to work on for cars . Drum brakes are easy but time consuming and fiddly . I don’t mind caliper rim brakes on bikes . It’s all I’ve ever known . And , hey , what about wet brakes ? Hydraulic has got to be better than wet rim brakes . Wet rim brakes will give you a thrill you might not like 🤣 .
Yeah, mine has hydraulic disc brakes. Honestly, maintenance is pretty minimal. You only need to bleed them every year or two (sometimes even longer) if they start feeling spongy or if you open the system. Most of the time it’s just replacing the brake pads when they wear out.
Mechanical disc brakes work with a regular steel cable, just like rim brakes. Instead of the cable squeezing pads against the wheel rim, it pulls a lever on the brake caliper that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
And yeah, hydraulic brakes are a huge improvement in the wet. Since the rotor is up near the hub, it stays much cleaner and sheds water almost immediately. Rim brakes have to wipe the water off the rim before they really start braking, which can be pretty exciting in the rain! 😂

When I do tank maintenance, buckets are left for a couple of days to allow any sediment to settle to the bottom so the water can be poured into watering cans for the garden. Today I found 3 shrimp had hitched a ride and were very close to becoming fertiliser for the garden. The 3 little guys are sitting in a cup of water tempreture acclimating to indoor temps. When ready, they are to be shot back into the tank with a turkey baster

Is a Friday at work which (usually) means 1 provider so it's relatively short and quiet day. That just means me sitting here thinking what I need to do when I am set free sometime after 3.

I have a to do list regarding the tanks that I want to do today so that tomorrow I can get the pond plants set up on the tanks; the 120, 60 and possibly 33.

I paddled across a stand of Vallisneria americana yesterday, in an isolated arm of a slow river. I was struck by the fact it was reddish toned, something I've never seen in the aquarium. I've rarely gone into shallow, swampy waters like that because of the bugs, but it was worth playing at being a swat team to see that. The sun exposure was intense.

There was also a lot of what appears to be Cabomba, an invasive escape from the aquarium trade in this region. It was quite a different habitat to look into, with clear water, huge numbers of fry and juvenile fish, and plants that were thriving in blazing sun. The usual local plants were there too, though I have seen zero Ludwigia this year.

It was the first time I've ever kayaked without pain. I usually grit my teeth and go for it anyway, as my lower back is what it is. It has always hurt - every time. But I bought a seat with better lumbar support, and for the first time ever this activity I enjoy wasn't at a price. I could enjoy the dragon flies, and was buzzed by a bald eagle that missed a grab at a fish maybe ten boat lengths away from me. It was a beauty.

Hey Gary ! Can you swim ? Just wondering because a kayak is going to demand that of you someday .

I come from a long line of Newfoundland fishermen and Merchant Marine sailors. Of course I can't &^&^%^ing swim! Do you think I want to bring on bad luck?

My Uncle Syd stood on the deck of a torpedoed sinking minesweeper on the North Sea in 1943, looking at the oil burning on the water when another sailor said "So Syd, can you swim?" Sydney said he answered "What, all the way to Norway?"

I can dog paddle elegantly or make like a racing walrus in a pinch. I wear a lifejacket. But I have no death wish. Swim. Huh, the very idea.

Well, Amazon delayed my delivery to tomorrow so my plans to get the filters swapped and the pond plants in my tanks kinda went out the door. So I'm grocery/errand shopping and making some chicken au poivre with rice for dinner.
Unfortunately I was shopping at Costco and my mood is a bit 🤬 due to the other shoppers.

Well we took too long shopping so it's too late for chicken (still about 35 min from home). I'm ok doing that tomorrow, got a nice sushi platter at Jewel (IL grocery store) for dinner.

@Back in the fold , Costco is filled with entitled Zombies that park carts diagonally in the aisle and block any remaining space staring blankly at the self, or popping out of the aisles and into the main thorough way like they own the store, or pushing you away from any samples when I could give two 💩💩 for samples.
I went there for tuna; got figs, beignets, and raspberries too. Even leaving the store you are assaulted either by those who don't move or those heck bent on 🤬ME FIRST...MOVE IT!😡 While you make your way to be receipt checked and exit the premises 🥵

I know how to sink like a rock; beat that !

Was scrolling before and came across a short video from FishShopMatt, ironically at a fish shop. A group of beautiful fish I have never seen before, at first I thought they were another lovely-looking rainbow fish until I found out they were Killis!

L tanganicus is one I've never kept. It's a Tanganyika fish adapted to hard water, and it is very picky about its conditions. It's beautiful, but large as well (in time) and harder to breed because of its narrow, stable water needs. I've had chances to get them at less than their usual high prices, but I've never had a tank for them at the time. Discus schmiskus - that is a challenging fish.

I run in fear.

I just returned from furniture shopping. No fun there.
