We have a beta in a 10 gallon tank with a hydor external tank. We had the tank set up for a few weeks. How often do we need to do a water change?

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Under normal conditions you do a 50-75% water change and gravel clean the substrate once a week. I prefer a 75% water change because it dilutes nutrients and disease organisms better than a small water change.

If the tank is newly set up, you should monitor the ammonia and nitrite levels and do a 75% water change any day there is an ammonia or nitrite reading above 0. You should also monitor the nitrate level and do a water change if the nitrate is above 20ppm.

Make sure nay new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

Hello, and welcome to the forum! :hi:

As for me, I do a 50%-60% water change/ gravel vacuum, every week. I put tap water in a 5 gallon bucket, and then put the correct amount of water conditioner in said bucket. (Tetra Aquasafe brand)

You can also use milk jugs (The plastic ones) to do small water changes, and also account for evaporation.), as long as you use the correct amount of water conditioner. Do you have some WC already? If not here are some of the best water conditioners. (IMO) ;)
