Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

There are actually several species of swordtail, but most of them are available only through specialist shops/breeders. The usual ones we see in shops are Xiphophorus helleri with some platy DNA. Wild X. helleri are a sort of greenish colour; those colours you see in shops are all because of the platy DNA

had 10 and they constantly fought with one another, nipped each others fins, and even bit one of the face off one of them. Nothing but conflicts with them and they've started going after my other fish in the tank too, so I ended up rehoming all 10 lol

Theyre meaner than my skirt tetras and cherry barbs combined haha

I put 10 Black Skirt Tetras in my tank thinking that would be enough to keep themselves occupied.

They just formed a gang and instead of going after each other, started systematically killing every other fish in the tank. Within hours, I had 3 dead fish. I dont have a second tank ATM, so I sadly had to flush them all before they could cause any more damage, with no time to rehome them. Poor little dudes.

New to this site as of yesterday; figured this thread would give me a sense of the membership, and it's wonderful to see the easy banter and consideration. I use a writers forum which is the same, and I thought was unique.

Having said that... :shifty:

Native UK fish beat any and all other fish as pets. :p

We pause for a brief commercial:
If you haven't yet voted for Tank of the Month, please vote now.
We now return to our regularly schedule program ;)

I don't know much about UK fish, but I agree that European and American cold water fish don't get their due. They are challenging, though, because most of them get too big to be practical for aquariums. Also, chillers are more expensive than heaters. I really think those are the big reasons they aren't more popular.

I can't remember what thread it was in, might have been this one, but a few of us were kicking around the idea of keeping trout in an aquarium a while back. I would put brook trout, cuts, or browns up against any tropical species for beauty. But they are pretty impractical for aquariums. That might not keep me from trying some day...

Was that not me in my intro thread?

I used to keep four juvenile brownies (Salmo trutta) in a 6' uplands stream tank that had six pumps to create a current. They were voracious eaters and I probably kept my local bait shop in business for a year before I had to give them to the local aquarium.

Incidentally, I didn't have a chiller for the termperature, but I suppose those lake char and mountain salmonids would require a much cooler temp. For me it was about ensuring highly-oxygenated water and water quality.

Afterwards I kept chub (leuciscus cephalus) and barbel (barbus barbus) in the stream tank with 2 less pumps.

Finally I ended up with 6 perch (creating a lake environment with lots of wooden structures) which are the most 'pet-like' fish I've ever kept. Those were fearless and as soon as I walked into the room they'd swim to the front of the aquarium. Again, I spent a fortune on their food, too!

Next time I go back to my folks I'll go in the loft where I keep my photos (remember them?) and post some pics.

We created a river tank that was around 12 feet long and pumped water down it, we managed to keep trout the biggest problem in doors is keeping the water temperature low enough to maintain the high oxygen requirements of these fish so you really need a heat exchanger. It all becomes very expensive.

I am new here, and perhaps this not the best way to make friends, but I was instantly drawn to this thread. Can I do a twofer?

Flowerhorns are a visual abomination. I can barely look at them.

Also, the majority of aquarium YouTube videos are terrible, up to and including many of the popular channels. Why would I want to look at a closeup of someone talking to camera for 20+ minutes?! There are a few who are earnest enough, or engaging enough who can pull it off. Few. I wish everyone else would just make a website, do a blog, or at a minimum learn some film school techniques.

Wow, that was cathartic!

I agree, I don't like flowerhorns either. And yes, most aquarium YouTube videos are super boring. There are a few good channels though. :)
