what filter are you running and what size tank do you have?

There are several ways of difusing the strength of your filter - a sponge covering is certainly one of them. Or a spray bar if you can connect one.....or even positioning the filter outlet against the glass.

I'm not familiar with that filter and can't find it via google.

I think you'd struggle to find a single filter that will cause too much flow in that sized tank anyway.

Well I've got a spray bar....so I'm going to see if that fits, if not ive got a sponge.

are you sure the flow is too powerful? What is making you come to this decision? Are your fish struggling to swim in the current?

As stated, unless you have a massive filter, it should not be too powerful for a 4x2x2 tank. Have you any idea how many litres per hour the filter is rated at?

No sorry, there's no fish in it atm, but it managing to break a couple of my amazon sword leaves and it's hard To put my finger over the hole were the water is coming from.

Did you buy the filter brand new? If so, do you still have the box or instructions? The litres or gallons per hour should be stated on there somewhere.

It came with the tank but I got the tank from eBay and no instructions came/manuals came with it but I can look on the filter though.

if you can find the exact name of the filter then we should be able to find the lph rating.

ok, so it looks like the pump is rated at 1300 litres per hour and your tank is roughly 453L (4x2x2). The pump should therefore only be turning over the volume of the tank a maximum 3 times every hour (the turnover will depend on how much media/gunk is in the filter). I would say this should be fine and certainly not too much for your tank.

If the filter outlet is blasting certain plants, try to position it so it is not directly aimed at them.

no problem.

the key for oxygenating the water is to have plenty of surface movement. If the water surface is 'rippling' then enough oxygen transfer should be occuring. If the surface of the water is very still or has little movement, there will be much less oxygen transferred.

your fish will tell you if there is enough. If there isn't enough, their breahting will become rapid and some will go to the top of the tank where there is naturally more oxygen.
