Things Your Fish Do To Amuse?

My larger Frontosa has taken to pecking the thermometer so it taps against the tank like some sort of morse code. Usually in the evening once the lights have gone over to 'moonlighting'

There is no algae on it so I reckon he is just attention seeking

What, if anything, do your fish do?

I have plastic plants in my tank and you know how it usually has that plastic cup at the bottom to hold gravel?

Well Doppler (my dojo loach) likes to divebomb under my plants until the plastic part rises and sits ontop of the gravel instead of under it. Then he likes to go under that and use it as a hiding place... So quite regardly I will pass by my tank and see him sitting in the back with the bottom of the plant ontop of him..

It makes me laugh

Doresy - one of my male short bodied pink convicts ("George") does the same thing with the thermometer - and I'm sure it's to get my attention.

The first time it happened I was sitting nearby on my sofa and I kept hearing this tapping, so I was up and down off the sofa a few times going to investigate but couldn't see where the noise was coming from. A while later I noticed George staring at me and then as soon as I looked away I heard the tapping. I caught him doing this little trick eventually, out of the corner of my eye!

He'd swim over to the thermometer and tap it against the glass, making me look around and he'd swim back to the middle, staring at me...he kept doing it until I got up and fed him.

So now, if I hear him tapping, I know he either wants attention...or more food!

It was quite funny, to think that a fish could have the brains to learn that. Not that I think fish are stupid, I just never knew they could be so devious

Chops my oscar I was given by a lfs is the naughtiest fish ever. He had jumped through the feeding flap and got stuck in it, since moving him to a bigger tank he constantly removed the thermometer (he actually managed to get it stuck to himself one time?), jumps at the glass sliders, headbuts the lights jumping for food (although this habbit I have slowly trained him out of), he swims so close against the glass to say hello to me his eye gets pushed back into his head but I love him to pieces

Cichlids are definately the best fish for amusement; I've got an Oscar too and he's everyone's favourite. He likes to make faces at people and pretend that he's starving. He also hates having his water changes done and sinks to the bottom of the tank, slightly on one side and tells me that he's dying (anthropomorphize? me? never... )

I know my kuhlis do what my sister has deemed the suicide jump. They sit somewhere like on a plant leaf, and then just let themselves fall..until they feel like swimming again. Lol

Well with my stock i have at present, it has to be my electric blue crayfish, he will clamber over anything in the tank like a bulldozer, then gets to the front walks up the front glass until cant go no more<do you remember those old toy cars that drove at a wall,then up,fall over and return driving back until it hits another obsticle, thats what he's like
Then he stands there clanking his claws giving the idea hes gonna get ya, then will do a wriggling jig, makes us all laff..Finishes it off by walking backward into his cave,

My pair of Hybrid Angelfish (AltumXCommon) leap out of the water and deliberately land on their sides to cause a loud splashing sounds . However, I think they know it gets on my nerves so they are doin' it even more now

One of my bettas (my halfmoon male, Amun) is a total prima donna about the current in his tank. There's hardly any current, but he insists that he can't swim because of it. I have walked into the room and seen him cruising around the tank, but as soon as he sees me, he acts like he's struggling to swim. I know he's just being a brat because my little male crowntail who is less than half his size plays in his filter current all the time and there's WAY more current in Jasper's tank than there is in Amun's (Jasper is the crowntail).

My ryukin goldfish, Indie (short for Indiana Jones), will sit at the front of the tank staring at me until I feed him. I've looked over a few times and he'll look away like "I wasn't looking at you. La di da di da di!"

I have the wimpiest tiger barbs in creation. I have nine of them in my 29gal, and they range in size from about 2" to 2.75". They are afraid of EVERYTHING. I have one peppered cory (aptly named "Jaws") who will circle beneath the tigers until they aren't paying attention and then he'll dart up into the middle of their school and they'll scatter in terror. Jaws will then go back to swimming around like nothing is wrong.

Tyr, my male GBR, likes to think he's tough. After I had an emergency with my 55gal (came home to 6" of water in the tank and the rest of it on my living room floor...problem with the canister filter spray bar), I moved the fish from that tank into my various other tanks until I got the problem sorted. Moved my albino cories into the 20gL with Tyr, the black neons and the panda cories. Tyr would charge at my biggest female cory (she's about 2.5"...Tyr is not quite 2" yet) and display at her. She would just sit there like "Whatever, dude" and swim away.

I was watching my tank earlier and my Whiptail cat actually whipped one of the Panda Corys with her tail! I was just telling my son about it and how I'd never seen her do it before when one of the Adolfi's swam past her and she did it to him too! Keeping them off her algae wafer I think

My big two get up to all sorts of mischief - though quite outdone by Chops ahaha

My Severum constantly attacks my amazon sword the only plant he has not destroyed so far though - my girlfriend calls it his gardening time haha We also catch him swimming at the glass at a funny angle scraping the algae off the glass haha.

My Nic is the funniest though - constantly digging and spitting clouds of sand all over the place (and other fish) her other hobby is moving twigs around the tank - she often picks up a sizeable twig and parades around the tank with it for quite some time lol other times she just stands them all up on their ends which is quite clever really......

Both of them do the tapping thing but with my air stone - interesting little thing we may have stumbled across there.....

i tend to find that whenever im trying to take a photo of my tank from quite close in, my black angel calmy swims through the shot pretending im not there or something. always wants to be in the photos. always.
