Tank Reading Help

I have no way of getting a test kit my other half is at work and has got the car, so wont be able to go till this evening.
done another test and the no3 has dropped to 40 is that a good sign.
Have pointed the filter to the surface so its causing lots of bubbles on top the water, lack of oxygen would that be because my filter isnt good enough.

yep 40 is better, try not to let it get it any higher though. to be honest i dont know the answer to that - better (higher output) filters will filter impurities much better, therefore creating much cleaner water for the fish, thus creating less chance for disease to start from 'dirty' water. post here about it http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/forum/9-hardware-do-it-yourself/ , then you can figure out whether to get a new filter or not.

what type of filter do you have
and when was it last maintained
like the sponges washed out in
old tank water

Agree, might be good to review exactly what is done during weekly gravel-clean-water-change maintenance and during biweekly or monthly filter maintenance if this is a smaller filter. WD
