Spawning Teqs

Ooh how incredibly exciting!!!! We NEED pictures!!

:D

Just uploading some! Will edit in a sec with them!

Apart from the obvious ones, the majority of the nest you see have fry dangling too. It's clearer to see if you look in the top left hand corner..

Lots of little guys venturing away from the nest

And there are quite a few in a big group on the left here..

Here is a quick question for anyone who has had experience with spawning..

A lot of the babies are now free swimming, some still slightly 'hang' about but they are unsupported by bubbles and go off in quick bursts around the tank before settling again. Some are still, however, not "free swimming". I'm leaving Teqs in for as long as possible, any sign of baby eating and he is out. But when should I drop in some VE? It's possible that if I wait for the rest to catch up with the first, the first will not have eaten anything apart from their egg sacks in 24 hours (at this time).

Wow......we'll be over tomorrow to check them all out!!!!!

I would try to leave Teq's until very late tonight or first thing in the morning would be better as long as he's still ok with the babies. As soon as he's out you can feed the babies......they should be fine as their eggs sacs should last them a couple of days after hatching.

I can't wait to come round.......when are you in tomorrow?

Teqs is still doing great with the babies, he is looking tired and the majority are doing find by themselves, although there are still a few that are a little behind and need a hand.. or rather a mouth.. for support.

In alllllllllll day tomorrow whoooooo! So come over whenever you guys are free, I'll be in!

Awesome, you have TONS! They are going to be beautiful when they grow up.

Sy, I wouldn't be surprised. They chucked a wobbly when the 23 gal tank came home, saying it was 'huge' and they got 'conned' into letting me have it. Rubbish. I told them exactly how big it was. It's not even THAT big it's only a 2.5 foot tank. Funny isn't it, they'll take up half the freezer with a gigantic bag of cat food, step over her when she lies all over the kitchen floor, and she sleeps in whichever bed she likes. With the fish, I pay for it, I do ALL the work and the tanks are in MY room and on MY veranda - not an imposition at all... but I still cop it. I threaten them usually... 'if I didn't have these fish tanks taking up all my time, I'd probably have a boyfriend by now...'

That usually works.

Lol....we almost emigrated to America recently, as I'd already lived there years ago. I may also be visiting New Zealand next year.....wonder if I could smuggle some over to Australia :hey:

Right then Maddie.....will be over either tomorrow afternoon or early evening....will let you know tomorrow lunch time, and give me a shout if you need anything bringing over :good:

Thanks guys, I am very proud of him. I think I'll get up and check him a through times during the night, to make sure he isn't eating them lol.

No probs Netty, will wait to hear from you tomorrow. The only thing I can think of that we might need is a cricket or two for little Fistral if you have any teeny ones lying around? If not, I think we are all sorted!

Right, I'm off to read my book and keep an eye on the tank, lol!

Yep....no probs. We just picked up a load of crickets this afternoon so will bring a few over for Fistral :good:

Right!

Teqs did great over night, like a proper weirdo I got up every 2 hours to watch him for a few minutes, to make sure he wasn't eating the babies. He wasn't and I've just this minute taken him out of the tank, basically because I think he needs a bloody good feed and a bit of sleep lol. The remaining babies are mostly free swimmers, with what looks just 5 or 10 that aren't but I'm not worried. I am sure they will be fine, some Dads start to eat them as soon as they hatch and need to be taken away, and the babies live, so I think them having him in there for such a long times means they are very lucky!

Teqs is having a good old munch in his old tank, looking very tired but very smug. And he has just spotted that his sister is still next to him, so he is a happy happy man.
Okay! I'll get some more pictures later. I figure, some people might like to follow this over the next few months to see how the fry develop, so after another one or two daily updates, I'll leave it off with pictures and stuff and only put up details as and when anything changes or so.

How wonderful! Well done Teqs, enjoy your resting :)

I will definitely want to see updates :)

Well done Teq's......he deserves a bit of pampering now after doing such a great job :good:

The babies should do just fine now. It's perfectly natural that you will lose a few but with the amount you have, you should have a good number of babies make it :good:

Thanks guys. Teqs had a huge feed and is looking a little less, uhmm, worn out now. His sister has spotted him again on the other side of the divider and has got full breeding stripes and is getting eggy lol. It's sucha shame I don't have plans to breed with her again, she was absolutely fantastic. Patient, gentle, very keen, certainly let Teqs know when she was ready. A real gem.

The babies are now having VE that I got from Netty. Don't ask me if they are actually eating it.. you can hardly see the VE let alone the fry eating it lol. The fry are much more confident now, having a good old nose around the tank. It is quite worrying though, one minute you can only see one and you pinch yourself wishing you'd watched them more closely and maybe you could have stopped them dying, then you see a group of 20 in the corner fighting over a bit of leaf.. little sods!
