Before contemplation of another species in your tank I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend that you do extensive research on the ones you currently have. Clearly you have a lot of misconceptions as far as your current stock, and you need to get them taken care of before you add more fish to the puzzle. How long has your tank been setup? Is it fully cycled with good water parameters? Some fish are very sensitive to new tank setups. Do a lot of reading and carefully plan out what you want in the tank, make sure all the fish require the same parameters and get your current stock sorted.

The large tank is a few year old, but iv only just got it I'm just waiting for all the water to cycle round so it's not harmful when I move my fish over

Your tank won't cycle by the water going through the filter. You'll need to use ammonia and/or some of your media from the already cycled tank.

As man of fish said, just running it through the established filter won't help at all. First you need to go through a process called the nitrogen cycle in which you grow nitrifying bacteria that breaks down ammonia and nitrites in to a less hatful substance called nitrates, but if you can. Just add a third of the media from your established tank to the new tank filter as if you do this you won't have to wait months for the tank to properly cycle

Also, just removing a bit of water wont help either
