Even second hand is expensive! My new setup will be near £1000 to set up probably more once I have bought fish and corals and additives etc. I also don't have anything like a chiller and other bits on my list!

Also considering you wouldnt need to do any of the setup hard work its all done for you!

Well, i didnt bother reading the listing because i see it too often but for once, im understanding the seller.

I have had to tell so many marine keepers who say they cant afford to keep their tank going and i tell them they may as well keep going because people are too tight at the moment to pay for anything.

We set up a decent display tank, a £680 custom build Seashell Tiepolo tank, about 2.5ft x 2ft x 2.5ft "almost a cube" with a good sized sump, eheim compact, mature media, 3 x 850 Seio magnetic powerheads (£50 each), 60kg of liverock, LOTS of zoas, mushrooms, yellow polyps, duncans corals, ricordia, 7 large toadstools and about 4 leathers of odd sorts, chilli coral, feather dusters, 3 kenya trees, scopas tang, scooter dragonet pair, algae blenny, 6 green chromis, 3 magnifica firefish and 1 decorata, foxface, alleni damsel and a pair of clowns and a sulphur goby and an orange spot goby and 2 huge cleaner shrimps and 6 peppermint shrimps (basically all the end of our stock).

Not to mention 2 x HD Tiles, a Twin set of LEDs and 2 x blue/white tiles. (comes to about £1300)

We considered selling it as an entire set up but whats the point? The tank has had so much work put into it!! There is about 5-6K worth of tank/equipment/stock there...

Tragic to see it sold off bit by bit! As shop is relocating and new 7x2x2 tank is going in, we dont need this one but we paid for it so it isnt going for nothing, rather it sat there empty than went to someone at a loss!

I also respect the guy for saying it must go to someone with experience of marines! At least it won't be some one with no money looking for a cheap setup and killing the fish with lack of knowledge and money to do anything about it!

I guess what you are paying for are the corals and live rocks and fishes. As you said the gears are not worth that much as they are used. A small piece of coral in LFS is around £30. I'm sure there are quite a few pieces in there. Marine fishes are also expensive.

Still, personally I won't pay £1k for a fully setup fish tank as I will have to take it all apart to move it to my house, then put it all together again. And I might not even be able to put it back the same way it was. The fishes will probably die from stress from the move. Asking for anything more than £500 is a bit much really.

The fun in fish keeping is the research and setting up. I might ask for advice but I wouldn't want someone else to do it for me.

This is a non-standard thread for this section but I am loathe to interrupt the discussion since it may help people see different sides of a sale of a used tank.
I spend tons of money on any new tank, if I buy it retail, and would love to be able to recoup a large fraction of that expense if I sell it. As it turns out I am far more often the buyer of used equipment because I am well aware that equipment never holds its value very well. When I spend a ton of money buying a particular tank, one that suits me and my home, I am stating, by that purchase, that I am willing to buy that particular equipment at the prevailing retail price because it suits me so well. If I turn around the next week to sell that same equipment, I hate losing money on the transaction so I ask for a large percentage of what I have spent. As a realist I do not expect to get anything near that amount, even if I have not had the arrangement long enough to get it cycled.
The real world will sneak up on me and demand that I reduce my price by a huge amount because the next person will simply not be looking for exactly what I was once seeking. My choice of fish or even salt vs. fresh may well not suit the next person. That means that my equipment has very small value to many of my potential buyer. If I am willing to place the objects for sale for a very long time, the perfect buyer, someone with exactly my own tastes, may wander by. Otherwise I am looking at selling my prized possession to someone who will immediately choose to use it in a different fashion. That person will never be willing to give me more than the used equipment value of the parts that match their desires. If a freshwater person is the only bidder on a salty setup they will determine the value using a reference freshwater arrangement to estimate value. The fact that someone has spent tons of money getting things like live rock will simply not enter into the equation of value for a freshwater keeper. Whether the true value, in terms of expenses already accrued, of an arrangement is 1000 GBP or even 5000 GBP will matter not at all to a freshwater person who could buy the parts that really matter to them for 300 GBP. They will only be willing to pay 300 or even a bit less.

I think thisis actually a very useful thread to have and i dont understand the sentiment behind wanting it locked? There is nothing 'stupid' in it and with a slight edition LOL there is nothing offensive and so i dont think much reason to lock it.

That said, there are so many people out looking for a bargain and as fishkeepers gain knowledge, i swear they grow more...umm.... determination!!

I am absolutely gutted, i just put in about 2 years into a heavily planted tank, a Fluval Venezia/Vicenza(cant remember which is which) 260 Bowfront. About £250 of plants (big anubias and javas on wood, 30cm tall cryptos, aponotogetons, hygrphillia polysperma, rosanerva and difformis, hydrocotyle, amazon swords, vallis, ludwigia and so on, about 15-20KG lava rock, $50 bogwood, 2 x 25L sacks of JBL Manado (£35+ each) already mature and full of nutrients, 2 new bulbs, 10 x harlequins, 10 x white clouds, 8 x panda corys, 4 x xl flying foxes, 1 x oto, 10 x male cherry barbs and a few extras.... plus all the mature media/305 filter, extra powerhead, plant food.... etc

£170. Devastated to see it go but go it had to.... Someone got an absolute bargain...

This is why its not worth selling an entire set up. Because people are daft. They would rather pay 10 x more in smaller payments rather than bothering to save up a lump sum and get a bargain.

Its not necessarily a sign of the times more a sign of a lack of common sense in most people (which working in retail... i have no faith at all in common sense in other people!).

I just hope that someone might grow some common sense... and spread it!

I pay for my insurance monthly and so pay a tonne more.... how hypocritical is that!? however... buying a tank doesnt need to be a yearly thing (fr most people LOL) but i gotta pay insurance somehow...

i am a master at 2nd hand aquarium and equipments resales but my tank and equipments a brand new. paid just under 2,000 quids even though i know i can get the same stuff for 300 quid or less...

Whilst not getting into the "discussion" about good or bad price as I really know nothing about marine, all I can say is I'd far rather spend that kinda cash on freshwater.

I was, before reading this thread, thinking of dipping my toes into the salty side, but at the prices a few of you have said have put me off, for the meantime anyway.
