Has anyone had any luck with placing segments of soapstone in the fish tank? The rock is hard, it just cuts very easy and has a soapy feel from the power, hence the name. Its usually higher in iron content then most rocks.

Just curious if anyone has actual real experience with this rock type in the tank. It comes in all variety of colors and would be best described as a granite/marble look when polished.

I have over 30 pounds of this stuff I could slice super thin to replace my rusting slate from Kettle Point.

I honestly don't know about in a fish tank, but I do know it's virtually non-reactive with just about everything out there. Might just work.

I would soak it for a while in some dechlorinated heated water and then test the water to see if it's changed any of the parameters.

My only worry is that IIRC if you get soapstone wet it produces a white powder which suggests to me that it's not really waterproof.

But I say try it and see in a fish free environment - not your cycling tank!

You'd have a permanantly clean tank seeming as it's soapstone.

Sorry couldn't resist

Chemically, soapstone is composed mostly of talc (as in talcum powder), hydrated magnesium silicate (Mg3Si4 O10(OH)2) plus other minerals.

I would not put this in any aquarium.

I have never seen soap stone go soapy under water, only when your cutting, carving or sanding it does it do this. If you think its best to keep it out I will.

I have purchased some lawn edging saped like rock. It's the moulded to shape plastic stuff. Some of my ornaments are similar in nature. I will cut it up and try to make it natural and use it instead as I don't have any other sources of flat rock, and would like to keep the weigh down.

I'll send a pic after I take out the old and puit in the new.

Ok I just extracted the small piece of soapstone I had placed in the tank last night, of course making crane and compressed air sounds while doing it. My mother walked by and looked at me like I was an idiot.
