Is a good idea, i did this to stop my rainbow cichlid babies getting sucked up, only problem is the intake gets clogged up quickly.

Very true. i use that trick for my fry trap as wel, stop the real titchy ones swimming out

When you get tired of the nets and tights plugging up, try the old livebearer breeders trick. Cut a slit in the end of a sponge filter media replacement, mine came from an AC 70 filter replacement package and slip the cut sponge over the end of the inlet tube. The sponge I am talking about is this one.

When in place for about a month it looks like this.

It does not plug up easily and can add its own media surfaces to the biological filtration of your filter. I clean mine every few weeks using my gravel vacuum.
