Schoolboy Error

i added 40 cardinals to my tank last week. some of them were absolutely tiny. today when i did my waterchange i had a head count and only had 20. took the filters apart and in 1 of the filters there were a load of dead fish and 2 live ones. so ive lost half my cardinals to the filter. which has cost me around 40 quid .

1 of my externals has a couple of slats snapped off the intake so its big enough for tiny fish to be sucked up. this was never a problem as i used to have big cichlids. so i have given myself a good telling off and cut up 1 of my nets to stretch over the intake so it doesnt happen again.

same thing happend to me mate when my jags spawned right next to the filter intake the fry got sucked up as soon as they where free swimming oops

yep so now i gotta get another 20 cardinals , plus i want some more plants then theres the small matter of £300 worth of discus. ad that to the £400 ive already spent and its getting a tad pricey. needless to say the missus is now starting to moan about how much im spending on the tank . .............. yeah like thats gonna make a difference !!

well she plays bingo on the internet easily 30 quid a week so i say to her dont even think about moaning at me for spending money on my tank when you waste loads of money on that. i tell her that the tank is my bingo. shes got no answer to that . fight fire with fire mate thats what i say

Mark I'm sorry for your expensive loss mate, I've got a spare intake strainer, I can post it over to you if you want mate? I lost a lot of baby shrimp that way, it's bloody heartbreaking

Let me know if the nets don't work out for you (plant matter tends to get stuck round it and you might get piddled off with it so gimme a shout if you change your mind)

do what i do Mark, just add the fish and plants without her knowing.

Ideally the plants first and then the fish, when she looks in the tank and see all these new fishes, just say ''they all must have been hidden, they came free with the tank''

lol ian i dont bother with all the cloak and dagger stuff i just tell her straight im spending the money on my tank . dont get me wrong im not a hitler or anything like that , its quite fair. if i want to spend money on my tank i will and i wont put up with her moaning about it as long as we can afford it. on the flipside it works both ways . if karen wants to spend some money on herself , then as long as it doesnt interfere with the bills etc then she can . the only difference is i dont whinge about it
