Now that I am down to 4 older platy fry in my 30L I am ready to move them over to the larger tank and the original plan was to replace these with a betta.
Haven't really thought about it much lately until today we saw what we initially thought was a jet black specimen. When we looked closer he was indeed as black as could be, but also had a velvet quality that revealed a deep red shean at certain angles! A nice little touch was white tipped front fins (the two long ones below front end).

Hehe we were so tempted but I felt I needed to be sure we were ready for a betta so came home.

LFS wanted £19 for him and not sure if this is a good deal or not?

Also would a (mature) UGF be suitable for a betta?

Olly.

Ive seen beautiful ones on ebay and breeders for less, but if you really like him go for it, he sounds lovely but if he is just a veiltail then proberbly not worth £19.

Yes an UGF should be find providing regular maintanance is carried out, bettas dont like strong water flow anyway.

Sounds nice :good: Any idea what tail type he was? Because that could be whats making the price higher. Also, I know there are nice ones on ebay etc.....but you would end up spending that much anyway with the postage.

It looked like an ordinary betta just hadn't ever seen that colour before! He was displaying to another betta in an adjacent tank so I tried to video him but then he got a little skittish and clamped up... Apparently someone else had videoed him earlier - obviously a bit camera shy!

There were one or two other interesting fish their including orange laser line cories which I have never seen before  I think they were £12 each and were a little too big for my liking but certainly quite striking! I think I could have easily spent some serious cash today!

wow, 12 pounds is a lot of money- her ein the states you pay rarely more then 4 $ per betta, and there are some really striking speciemns among them, too! The way you described the fish though, I still would have shelved out that money, blacks are not so common. I would have to order one like that online, since the common ones are red, blue, green, purple, or combinations of them. I've never seen a black betta like u described, not in germany, not here in the different stores! I read that truly black bettas are difficult to breed, since there is always a gene factor that pops some extra color still in there! Go for it, the one u found would let most breeders heart beat faster!

£12 was the cory sorry mate the betta was £19!!!

I got the vid off my phone but like I said he was clamped up at this point...

I dunno £19 does seem a little steep tbh. Especially as I haven't really looked around yet!

He looks like my Darth, who I lost last month. He was black with a red to him, and had the white tips! £19 seems excessive - I live in Manchester, where are you going that is selling bettas so expensively?
If you are anywhere near the Ashton area, give Meadow View fish farm a call to see if they have bettas in. They get the occasional stunner in there, and they are all £4 :) I also got a beautiful betta from The Abyss in Stockport the other day - they only have a few on but are setting up a load of small tanks so might be getting more bettas in soon.

Hi thanks for that, I am always interested in new (decent) lfs's in my area :good: Shop was Maidenhead Aquatics woodford so I guess that will explain the price lol! I really am not sure with bettas so a bit more research is necessary I think!

Don't really like the other place you mention, as they have given me some dodgy advice in the past although have to admit they have some very nice and healthy stock.

Any other decent places in the Manchester area?

Hi

Was it the Maidenhead aquatics with the high prices??

Thats quite interesting, cus our local one is quite competetive.

I suspect it is because for one they are strapped to the side of a posh garden centre in a posh area and also there isn't any competition nearby..

Other prices didn't seem too bad I purchased cards 6 for £12 2 weeks ago so don't think they are taking the mick with normal stock...

I think I will try this place in Ashton Sunday see what they have in stock!

Olly.

Ours is in a garden centre too, but there are another 6 lfs within 30 minutes so loadsa competition :good:

The Stockport place has moved and is pretty impressive, have only had a few fish from there but so far no problems... it is just 5 mins from where i work, sooo tempting!
the Ashton place is OK, not the best LFS but they do try. I would call ahead to see if they have stock cos sometimes they have like 3 bettas left, the runts of the litters! but they do have a whole betta wall so when they first get new stock in there is a lot of choice! I've not been in for a while so no idea what they have right now... a few months back they got sent 150 bettas instead of 50, and most were plakats... nightmare, as not many people want plakats and they didn't have the space to separate them on all the betta wall so they had them dotted round the tank in different tanks... :S
