Recession Beginning To Affect My Fish Keeping.

I live in Arbroath, Scotland and there is nothing in the way of pet stores anymore, theres one that's good providing that he already has the types of fish you want. But he won't order any specific species you want. Is anyone else having this problem, there just seems to be a lack of decent aquatic stores lately. How do you get by this problem. I've ordered off the net before, with great service too but WOW its expensive. Is there any sites online that are reasonably priced that anyone can recommend.

Same probs,

I'm in Mid Wales at the moment most of the time, we now only have a pets at home (luckily a tolerable one - except for coldwater), which I find expensive.

We did have a local petshop that sold aquatics, but he's packed that side in very recently.

(There's also a Garden Centre with some aquatic stuff, but very expensive).

I can't get anything ordered in either.

When I', down South, things are much easier, theres a Maidenhead near Cardiff, another pets at home, local petshops galore! - but NONE of these shops will order in fish/inverts, they won't take the risk with not being able to shift unwanted stock.

I keep Puffers so can never really find what I want 'in store' and order on line! Luckily I have a fish keeping mate and we order on line at the same time to keep the price down, can you not try to hook up with someone local and order in pairs? Just a thought!

I find the same. There's 4 LFS's that I would have went to that have closed down since the start of the year. This was within a 20mile radius from my home. They weren't great, but if I was in that town I'd have went in to have a look. They may have had something I wanted about 1 in the 15 times I was there.
I've always had to travel about an hours drive to get fish I want. Which also means the fish are more expensive when your adding diesel up on them too but I don't mind about that. These shops are still poor in comparision to ones I see in England and although they will order fish in, it means you'll have to wait months for them.

buying "un seen" from tinternet, is one of the main reasons we are losing REAL LFS. lol, looking at most sites. there advice is far worse than an LFS too. though i agree thats not saying much.

I disagree! My LFS will charge me over the top prices for fish I have ordered in! I use the same two suppliers and can literally have the fish that I want within 3 days. As for the advice given....I listen to no one other than my own research

Edit....just to add....if LFS stopped catering for the people that will buy what they tell them to and get fish in that people want then they will do better IMHO. I waited weeks fro my pre-ordered DP's and finally went on line [yes I did have a nightmare delivery this time for anyone who is familiar with my posts but.......] and got what I wanted! Horses for courses I say and each to their own.....lol
