Princesscoral's Journal

PrincessCoral, if we don't change the sand then you are not going to be able to keep the fish that you want  because the water will not be right for them, shall we have a look and see what the silver sand looks like, Rabbut says in looks very like the sand you already have??

what colour is the aragonite sand seffie?

a couple of bags of toys r us play sand which is silt free can look nice...and with the right lighting you can give it that nice pink colour like aragonite sand

i think seffie used that sand to give her no other choice than to move to the salty side!

But on a serious note, like Seffie has said fishes are like us humans in a way, you using that sand will make the fishes unhappy. Its like us, putting us in a really smelly room wont make us feel good, but to some species some might like it. Same with the sand some fish can handle it but a large majority cant. Plus silver sand makes your fishes more pretty :)

Thanks everyone :good:

I don't think you are going to like the playsand colour so we will need to do as Rabbut suggested and get silver sand - as Bagu said, it will make your fish look even prettier

Frst Seffie, I have dug up an old thread where Tolak gives nicely and concisely the requirements for angels, thought it may help you.

Tolaks Angel Tips

Secondly, how old is this aragonite sand. Am I right in thinking that aragonite sand loses its buffering capabilities over time. Is this not why many marine books tell you to periodically add some new aragonite sand??

If it has been used before, will it not lose this buffering capacity in not very long, particularly when Nitrates are being produced as this does tend to have an effect on pH and lower it over time.

Am I plucking something from my head that I have made up.??

:thanks: Tina - really interesting info there :good:

I'm starting to go back to the idea of keeping the sand, need to do a kh test but if that is ok :good:

I mean if Tolak says water that hard will be fine, who am I to argue :good: and PrincessCoral would be so pleased

Well, Argonite sand is surprisingly based on Argonite :shifty: so it will keep dissolving over time and not loose it's buffering capacity until almost all gone. It's the same stuff us reefer's use in Calcium reactors  The reason marine keeping books advise you to add new sand regularly is that it dissolves, so you gradually loose the amount of sand you have in the bottom for your sand bed  If you run a DSB filter in a marine tank, I'd suggest you mark a line where the sand is now, and look where the sand level is in a couple of months time, you should see a drop in the sand levels in your filter

All the best

seffie....

if you do end up removing the sand i recommend toys r us play sand...i have just used it and it is a pinky colour.

i took some pics for you so you can compare silver sand and pink sand
