Has anyone ever lost any fish due to a power out?

We just got some crazy heavy snow and wind so most of my town lost power. My house is wish out power and heat. I'm freaking out a little about losing any fish. I did not feed them today because there is no filter and I did not want any extra waste. The larger tanks will hold there temp longer but my 36 gal is getting cold fast.

Snowflake, last storm we lost power for 12 hours. When it got back up and running I had a bit of ammonia and nitrite build up. It was cold, did a bit of hot water water changes with water from the wood stove for the 10 gallon. Next time at 6-7 hours I would do a water change. The hotwater heater should keep the water warm for a couple days.

Hope it gets back up quickly.

Do you still have gas? If so, you can heat water on the stove and maybe cover the tank with blanket(s).

Insulate the tanks as best you can to keep them warm, maybe put some tin foil around them then put a duvet or a few blankets over the top of that.

As for the filters there are a few guides online about getting an airpump in near the inlet to keep some water flow through but you need a battery operated air pump. Though I imagine in your weather its not that easy to get to the LFS....

I imagine they are in short supply but can you get a generator?

hi snowflake, stressfull times i had a power cut plus a water cut for a total of 56hrs over christmas what a nightmare for my rio 300 an edge tanks. as im n.irish ther are still familys without water here now into the 15th day stoneage or what. back to my tanks i had the idea of a hot water bottles which i had to drive to my mums at the other end of town as they wer unaffected and use her water an electric lucky enough. i got my hands on 2 hot water bottles filled them an back home again i made that trip a few times but well worth it. my big tank i put the hot water bottle into clean plastic bag an carefully put it in my tank kept an eye on temp an covered tank with a good sleeping bag. the small tank in the kitchen was loosing temp faster in this case taped the water bottle to the outside of tank front covered it an prayed. when bottles cooled made trip to mums again an repeated process an forgot to say i stopped feeding the only thing i noticed my fish slowed down alot because temp just wasnt as high. when power an water was restored my tanks wer cloudy for a day or two done a water change, ther on the mend and never lost a single fish. so hopefully thers a fews tips for you an wish you luck..

Thanks guys. I put blanckets over the tanks and did not feed. We got power back it was out for 24hr. All my fish are fine I am not going to do anything to the water just going to let it filter.
