One For The Badis Lovers Out There...

Awaiting the little fishlets in the morning set the tank up tonight. My Krobia are looking significantly better so moved them into the main tank again and set this tank up after a large water change and decoration added. For the moment its got a basic heater and a Fluval U1 which should be changed to a mini external filter and a rena smart heater - and a slightly bigger tank eventually.

Plan for the tank is to let the moss grow all over the tank but keep it well trimmed - I could only afford one wedge of it today so kept my small redmoore in there and added a few other small wedges of wood and a few small rocks I had spare too - good tip - never throw away wood and rocks, they are extortionate prices and you will always find a need for them at some point haha.

Delivery is scheduled for before 1pm and I really hope they arrive on time as I have to be at work for 4

Really really unsure what I want to have in the tank with them at the moment. I was going to go for a fish day on Saturday but thats out the window now...... well maybe we will see.

That looks amazing wills. How many are you planning on keeping in there. What you going to put in with them.
I have the same little tank next to my tv with a loanly pair of corys and a snail awaiting to go back in the main tank. May take a leaf out of you book and get some little badis. They should be fine with sand shouldnt they.

After watching my Badis, the only thing I would say is for you to maybe plant one of the back corners densely?? I say that because mine seem to like having the cover of the plants to hide in even though they do spend a bit of time towards the front of the tank a little bit more now ....up to you though at the end of the day

Tank looks great Wills, although I agree with elisew, a small bushy plant could give them some more security. Got my days mixed on PM this mornin, thought it was Friday and so was your "big day!"

They`ve become a bit more confident now I think, probably because there`s nowt but shrimp in the tank with them and they`ve begun to spend a bit more time in the open areas of the tank which is nice as I get to see and appreciate them. I might even look at getting another 3 to be honest as they`re really lovely little fish

Thanks guys - I am hoping to get some small Anubias to plant over the twiggy wood in that corner - what you cant appreciate in the pic is though the amount of little caves in that structure.


Alex - I am getting a trio for this tank, I have a large grain sand in there but its nice and smooth just cheap stuff from Maidenhead but its still smooth and more natural than play sand - plus I didnt want to get a full sack of play sand for this little tank haha there is only a handful in there of sand! As for tank mates due to the low temperature of these fish your choices are quite limited but they do seem to go perfectly with Celestial Pearl Danios there are about 3 other schooling species that you can go for as an alternative mainly most micro danios as opposed to micro rasbora who prefer much higher temperatures. There are about 3 species of catfish that would work, 1 very rare gourami and a few loaches. But thats if its being kept biotope correct I would suspect that some American fish would work well with these particularly some cory species that prefer to be kept at lower temperatures.

I have to admit I have been caught utterly off guard by their temperature requirements and as a result I would give this advice on them - by all means get them for the little tank they are perfect freshwater nano fish but with regards tank mates you have to research thoroughly before purchase because the tank mates need to follow all these requirements (though one or two are optional)

- Need to thrive in 20-22 Celsius
- Need to stay under 2 inches max
- Need to be calm enough not to over power the badis - ie. avoid larger species of danios
- Should not be too distracting from the badis


Goat - need to pick your brains, can you think of any Asian Killi fish that could work in this tank preferably not annual - though that could work? And also any small rainbow fish? All the rainbows Ive come across so far have been higher temperatures but I am sure I have heard of some that do well in low temps?

Also how do cherry shrimp do in lower temperatures? Thinking of some cherry shrimp?

Elise - Are yours colouring up any more? Also not sure if we can get any more Last time I looked they are down to the last one haha!

Cherry Shrimps are ideal are ideal for Badis, they have same requirements, I would get some for my Badis tank if they weren't £4 each in my area

I wouldn`t say the Badis have coloured up any more yet so I guess it`s because they`re still young?? They`ll probably colour up as they mature......well I hope

Cherry shrimps......I have mine at 21/22C now with the Badis and they`re abslutely fine, more active at lower temp imo.

For anyone thats stuck on tank mates ive been doing some research on tank mates for my akysis which are also from Myanmar and just searching that one river ive found theres loads of small rasbora, loaches, dnios ,ect that will work.

Hmm, don't know of Asian Killi off the top of my head. Clown Killis have the right sort of temprement, but they need ~23C.

This non-annual species comes from West Africa and does best in fairly soft water; a 50/50 mix of London tap water with RO water should produce something around 10 degrees dH that will suit the species well. Like many killifish it will be short-lived if kept too warm, so a temperature of about 22 C/72 F is recommended. It is a peaceful species, and may be kept in pairs without problems. While it can be kept with peaceful tankmates that appreciate similar conditions, for example small whiptail and Corydoras species, like most killifish it is best kept alone so that breeding can be accomplished. Red-Striped Killifish are not fussy feeders, and though small live foods such as daphnia are preferred, a good quality flake food will usually be taken as well." (tropical fish finder)

The larger Rainbows like your old lacustris live in cooler water too, but perhaps a tad too big and boisterous!

Because that site lists 12-30 but some other sites say 25 or is your site the most accurate and the other sites just lumping them in as tropical community when in reality they are much more flexible? Also with the arc being slightly open topped do you think it could be an issue with these?

They are certainly on the list to keep an eye out for. So far

The species on there so far are

Parasphaerichthys ocellatus - Eyespot Gourami - which I will never find
Danionella dracula - the one I really want but again probs wont find
Sawbwa resplendens - probs one of the fore runner of 1 being found and 2 that I like
Danio erythromicron - quite possible to find but lots of larger look a like species
Danio margaritatus - Celestial Pearl Danio - most likley for tank but so expensive! - I wouldnt be disapointed though
Pseudomugil gertrudae - I have seen these a few times around the shops and at reasonable prices if I remember correctly

Then its onto catfish or loaches which in its self I cant decide on - I really like anchor catfish - a long time favorite and if I can find the specific species I need then Ill go for it - the Akyss like Kizno again an option but would rather go for something different haha because its looking like we have quite a few people doing similar tanks so Im trying to strive to do something different....

Im defiantly keeping it to just Myanmar. Im getting quite into the biotope thing and would like it to be as natural as possible. With this and my 150G Tapajos biotope hopefully i should be able to get some slightly different fish to the normals.

I believe that Rainbow site is the equivalent of the Rainbow bible, but perhaps drobbyb may have hand-on experience with these Rainbows. I think Kesgrave have had P. Gergtrudae and signifer on sale in recent weeks. If worried about the open top, perhaps a fine layer of floating plants would help?
