One For The Badis Lovers Out There...

i am very tempted to get some of the little Badis maybe 5 1 male and 4 females would they be alright in my tank tho is the question

33g heavily planted Fluval filter
2 angels
1 dwarf gourmais
15 galaxy rasbora
around 5 cherry shrimp
around amano shrimp
3 assissin snails

Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt Sparkling gourami need higher temps than the Badis would like Long term?
The Badis are from Myanmar and do best in temps between 16-22C.

Wills if your worried about catfish eating the eggs you could try making a moss carpet that covers a big section of the tank to give eggs/fry cover.

I believe the Badis are comfortable with temps around 24-25C or even fluctuations to around the 26C mark (or greater), the Sparkling Gourami are comfortable with a temp of 25-28C so it wouldn`t really be a problem to keep the temp at around 25C and it could possibly suit both the Badis and Sparkling Gourami?

alex, I`m not sure if the Badis could be kept with Angels or not, hopefully someone could give you the benefit of their experience though :)

They might be short term but not long. I keep Akysis prashadi and Akysis longifilis there from the same river and need to be between 16-22 they will go more extreme both ways but not long term.

This is from seriously fish on the badis
It is subject to seasonal temperature fluctuations in nature and is comfortable within the range 59 - 77°F/15 - 25°C with even greater extremes being tolerated for short periods. In many countries/well-insulated homes it can be therefore maintained without artificial heating year-round. Higher temperatures are known to stimulate spawning activity meaning a heater will be required if you want to breed the fish outside of spring and summer months though. Set it to around 68 - 75°F/20 - 24°C for long-term care and breeding.

So you might just get away with it but i think they would do best around the 20-22c mark.

kizno you are obviously much more experienced than I so I don`t doubt your thoughts and info for a second. B-)

The temperature issue isn`t a big concern for me personally as my Badis are in with my shrimps and they tend to be much more active at temps of around 22C. But what works for my situation may not work for others, I guess it`s trial and error sometimes to see what does work ;)

Im honestly not that much more experienced with stuff like this. Ive only just started keeping the Akysis and because there from the same place im just going by what ive been told about there need for temps. Im not trying to cause a problem or anything just saying im not sure how long they will last at tropical temps.

Continuing this idea, some time ago I was involved in a thread with Matlee and nmonks, regarding Denisonii Barb. Now these fish are often quoted as having a huge temp range of "hapiness," typically 15-26C and as it happened, both Matlee and myself were keeping them in tanks at the high end of that scale.

Neale went on to explain that as much as those mid-20s temps would be tolerated short term, the equivalent of summer in the wild, permanent temps around 25C would be no good for the fish at all on several levels...
  • The water would hold less oxygen at higher temps (they do like well saturated water)
  • They would need more feeding, as their metabolic rate would be higher
  • Consequently, they would not live anywhere near as long as they would normally be expected to in the wild.
The thread made me look at fish temps again when deciding on a temp for the 540l, when I ended up evacuating all but the Lionhead Cichlids out of the warmer Rio240. I settled at 22C as a comprimise, trying not to go too low that I may risk the immune system shutdown of some of the African species (Leopard Bushfish; African Butterfly), who are normally quoted as 23-29C in online profiles.

Alex.Wardle - I think the angels would eat them with ease as adults and also the dwarf gourami are too boistrus as well.

Good points raised here about the temperature - perhaps the options for tank mates are somewhat more limited than I first thought.... Kizno and/or Goat do you have any good sites on fish from Myanmar? I think I will keep this tank at about 21/22 rather than the planned 24.

You would have to get rid of the angelfish as these need higher temps. Also, there is a massive chance they will eat the Shrimp and the Celestial Pearl Danio (correct name for Galaxy rasbora). If the angelfish are removed, and the tank is around 20-21C then everything should be fine.
:oh: If you are using internal filters then CPD and the Cherry Shrimp may be sucked up

:good:
My pair of Scarlet Badis are more colourful and active in lower temps (19-21C), roughly this should be the case with your Badis :good:

It`s always good to have differing opinions, it`s how we all learn what works B-)

I`m definitely going to be keeping an eye on the temp in the tank where the shrimp and Badis are, ultimately if bringing the temp down is better for the Badis then that`s what I`ll do. Might see if I can push for another small tank for the shrimp.....hubby will love that......NOT! :fun:

Cheers Wills
Thats a real shame they look so cool. But its the fishes heath that is important to me so thats a no no. how about http://cgi.ebay.co.u...57#ht_774wt_907
would just like something different for the tank.

I dont have any info on the actual temps of the river but from what ive read on fish from there they seem to tolerate 15-24C like goat said the coldest is in there winter hottest in the summer. Most places also say that they can live at more extremes of that but thats like having a really cold/warm week and long term will do damage. To keep the fish in the best health and in the most natural way if you go for a Myanmar you could recreate there natural temps by having the tank 16-18 in the winter then raising it to 20-22c in the summer.
I think i might get rid of the Golden Panchax i have in my 21G and go for a Myanmar because it seems like quite a interesting stretch of river with quite a good variate of fish suitable.

Not sure how we all missed an obvious choice to mix with these Badis, as we talk about them all the time on the forum... The (Burmese) Celestial Pearl Danio!

Happy at 20C, very peaceful, in fact SF http://www.seriously...ritatus&id=1079 says this about them compatability wise...
"Other small cyprinids from Myanmar such as Danio choprae or members of the genus Microdevario are also suitable companions, and we suspect it might also do well alongside Dario hysginon or D. sp. 'Myanmar'.

Found out that Sweet Knowle Aquatics can be searched via countries, so here's their whole list of Myanmar fish...
