So are we running both filters now?

Yes. The Eheim is absolutely quiet. Thanks for your comments and advice.

A few thoughts about measuring bac colonies in the Eheim and preserving the bac colonies on the HOB until the Eheim is colonized. When the time comes to test the viability of the bac colonies in the Eheim and I turn off the Marineland, will placing the bio-wheels directly in Eheim tank for 12 hours preserve the bac colonies in the bio-wheels? Will this method give a false reading of the bac. colonies in the Eheim? Or, should I put a measure of tank water in a separate container, hang the HOB with the biowheels on this separate container and keep it running for 12 hours? Or longer? Or, do you recommend some other method?

Media: Oh I've never replaced a single bit of my media, its all the same stuff as originally came with the fitler. A lot of experienced aquarists pride themselves in having the same media for the life of hobby, lol. That's what ceramics are all about, they are built to last virtually forever. Sponges, a little less. They will eventually get tears in their structure and should be replaced when that threatens to create a "leak path" for the water to get through without being forced to be filtered. Usually polyfloss, or the white pads like eheim has will be the things that might need frequent replacing. I may try to do something like that, just have been too lazy up to this point.

This is good to know, that is, that the media can last a long time and that the sponges can be reused. I'll keep a spare set of sponges in case one tears.

Thanks,

Ranjohns

We can talk about this more, in a bit of a rush at the mo.

Day 100 fishless cycle
April 28

Nitrites are 1.0ppm 12 hours after dosing ammonia to 4ppm.

A brief history of nitrites in our tank: from April 10 to the 24th, nirtres were at 2.0; from the 25th through today nitrites have been at 1.0. I removed ~65% of the water on April 25.

After 24 hours nitrites are .5ppm. Should I dose ammonia to 5ppm again at 24 hours or wait until nitrites go to 0?

Thanks, Ranjohns

Yes, add back the ammonia.

-When? At 24 hours even if the nitrites are not at 0ppm? Or, when the nitrites goes to 0ppm?

Thanks, Ranjohns

You are looking at the ammonia.

If the ammonia was still at a higher amount at 24 hours than you wouldn't add it back up.

So yes, add ammonia back up at the 24 hour mark, even if you have .5 ppm.

Sorry for the confusion. I was looking at nitrites. Ammonia is 0 at 12 hours; nitrites are still above 0 at 24 hours. So, I'll redose ammonia to 4ppm 24 hours after previous dose to 4ppm, even if the nitrites are still above 0ppm at 24 hours, right?

Day 101
Nitrites are near 0 at 24 hours after dosing ammonia to 4ppm. Only 12 more to go.
