cories are best kept in groups, you could go with panda cories as they reach about 5-6cm so a group of 4 or 5 will be nice =] or even pygmy cories as they stay even smaller im sure so a group of 6 or 7 will be fine

that sounds like my tank will be quite full, im quite worried about over stocking this being my first time with tropicals.

I can't see a problem with adding 4 or 5 cories to your tank, so dont worry bout that, as long as you keep on top of your water changes there will be no problems, since your tank is already cycled the bacteria is already there

they will be fine =] just test your water of you are worried, cories are tough old things

when u get the new filter (if u decide to) make sure u transfer over filter media/bacteria from ur current filter

i think rams/apistos might try to eat shrimp so u may want to avoid those fish

i was going to run them both at the same time for a few weeks to let the bacteria build up, would i be ok doing this?

Hit and miss I think, it depends on the load and whether a second filter will actually need to do much.

If I were you I would run the new filter in tandem for a while, then when you take the old one out put some of it's media into the new filter too

Cories wont disappoint, especially if you have a large group of 5-6 or more
