New Betta!

I am going to ignore all posts that have to do with the bowl size.

Ok, so Toby wants to mate....why? Because he saw Sushi? I thought Sushi was a boy! o_O Does Toby know this?
And do I HAVE to mate Toby? If I don't, what will happen? Could I mate Sushi and Toby together, though I think they are both boys?

I have alot of questions...

No, it's just a natural behaviour that occures in all bettas, even females.
It is sometimes influenced by the presence of another betta (for males, it can be competition), (for females, it's trying to mate with her).
Toby knows Sushi is a boy. You most certainly don't have to mate Toby, it won't affect him any to be celibate for his entire life.
And no, if you put Toby and Sushi in the same bowl, they will fight and likely kill each other.

Alrighty, thanks.

Toby is probably competing with Sushi. He's making a bubble nest, and flaring. Sushi seems to take no intrest though, and refuses to flare back. Though, the odd time, he'll flare on his own without any influence from Toby.

Toby is very competitive.

For future reference, you might push them apart a little so they don't split their fins flaring. It can be unhealthy if they look at each other all day - They get stressed from flaring and posturing at each other.

Yes I know.

I only put Sushi beside Toby so they both could share the light. I was warming up their tank, and only had one light to use.
I am going to move Toby back to his original spot soon after his water gets a little warmer.

Lights are not the best method of heating for water - I tried it myself when I first started with bettas.
But the issue is that it warms only the top of the water, causing a temperature variance when they swim which is a shock to their system.
And when you turn the light off at night, move one bowl, etc, they cool down again, which is uncomfortable for them.

I'm completely with them on all of this. It IS really too small and it woud have been best if you would have researched it first. I do understand completely that you are probably young and just though "cool, i get to have a couple fish". Most people don't understand until later that it takes much more than just sticking them in a bowl. It's a learning process :good:

With that said, the water bill should not be affected in any way. Your parents saying that it will use too much water should not influene the water bill in any way. If their bills are anything like they are here, it's pretty much a set amount of money each month. If you go over, you still pay the same amount. If they want to save money they should get a large tank so that you will not have so many water changes. What will end up happening is that your fish can easily get diseases and require meds that can be up to $30 (at least around here) for Maracyn 1 and 2. Those are just 2 kinds of several they may eventually require. Most of us on here use resourseful ways to keep bettas (keeping them in VERY cheap storage containers and tupperware, etc) to be able to house them in a cheaper, more effective way. Keeping your betta can save water changes (saving water), meds, and your fish! How would you like to be kept in a cage? Yes, it's livable but it would also eventually make you miserable! I have a very sick fish right now that I am medicating and he looks happy as can be. It's obviouse he is in pain because of the infection he has, but you can't always base their happiness on the fact that they are swimming around. Also, you have not had them long enough to know if they will stay happy. You really can help this situation by talking to your parents about how it will save them water to not have to do so many water changes if you put them in a larger bowl. It's waste not to. :good:

you could try adding bit of warm water to there bowls if you think it would be beneficial but betta's dont really require heat although most of us keep them in filterd/heated tanks due to the fact that they like all other fish deserve to be treated like any other animal with respect and care...im new to the betta scene but i know enough about them to get around

Actually, bettas need to be kept at a constant 74-80 degrees.. Which can only be accomplished by a perfectly closed off, heated room, that never changes, or an internal heater.
Also, having filters with bettas is generally not recommended due to them liking still water, and strong current can shred their fins and stress them to death

That would be pointless since the water would just cool down anyway.
Yes, Bettas do require heat. They don't require filters

if you decide to mate him you will deff need a larger home for them......alot of homes actually not recomended to those who dont have time nor money to invest in to it

Actually, I'm currently using luke warm water for my Betta's. The water temperature doesn't seem to be dropping. I can always rise the temp. if needed with a light or heating pad.

I just cleaned Toby's water and used warm water. He enjoyed it. I added some gravel to his bowl and some pebbles as well.
Sushi is just fine. He is currently watching a color-changing light. It's really interesting to him!

How do you know it's not dropping? Do you have thermometers in their bowls?

A light will only heat the top of the water

I assume you are using water conditioner, right?
