New Betta!

Wow...they really need bigger tanks

I don't know how old you are but would it be possible to ask your parents for bigger tanks in exchange for chores?

To be quite frank...even a 2.5 gal doesn't take up much space at all...

I would hold off on getting more Bettas until the ones you have are properly housed

Woof, Bettagirl. That's treading some dangerous ground. :) 1/4 gallon bowls build up ammonia in about two days, if you're feeding him regularily. You would need to completely WC your fish every two days to keep them healthy, and their happiness would indeed suffer due to the stress of being removed every two days and tossed into possibly different temp. water, etc etc.
A 1 gallon wouldn't take up much more room than a 1/4 gallon, and they'd be so much happier. And you'd only have to change the water once every 5 days instead of every two.. :)
Also, I'm concerned that you wouldn't be able to heat those little bowls, and their temps could be low, or fluctuating.. Do you have them on heating pads or something similiar..?
We would really like for both you and your bettas to be happy as well, but if they die, due to ammonia poisoning or the stress of low water temp leaving them open to illness and parasites, neither of you would be very happy.. :)

Yes....

Well, first off, let me tell you that their bowls don't get dirty very quickly. I change the water every 2-3 days, and Toby really doesn't mind. I've only had Toby a few days, and Sushi for a few hours. I am getting heating pads, but until then I keep them in warm places where their water temp won't drop. As I said, I cannot get a bigger bowl. I am not allowed....*sigh*

I hate to sound too terribly harsh.. But I have a big pet peeve about buying pets without knowing whether you can or can't take care of them properly.. I'm glad you change the water, but at the same time, your betta may be suffering from so many water changes. Heating pads will help keep them stable, but I think you'll be met with alot of worry and aggression from other members over the size of their containers.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but please consider their health. They rely on you to give them a nice home where they won't be poisoned by their own feces (which they have to swim through..) or get so cold they can't swim easily..
I'm sure they'd be so much happier and healthier in something larger.. :good: Perhaps you can convince your parents, if you get a 2 gallon and divide it? That wouldn't take up as much room as two seperate one gallons...

I don't think you can see ammonia can you?

Actually, you can. :) Once it builds up to dangerous levels, your water will slowly get milky/cloudy.

There is a difference between looking happy and being happy. A 1 quarter gallon is like living in a house the size of your room. Tbh, I'm not sure why you would get another betta if you know you cannot keep it in a proper sized bowl. i'm not trying to be rude here, but the fish would like it much better if they lived in a 1 gallon bowl, and if you cannot keep them in proper sized tanks, you should rehome them. Once again, I'm not trying to be rude, but you're really limiting your fish to such little space and it's not right.

i wouldn't be getting anymore until you can get larger tanks either. as for heating, none of my boys are in heated tanks but my room is BOILING - they're fine. as its been said, they really shouldn't be in anything under one gallon for proper conditions and as for decor - its hard to keep hiding places in bowls that small. as my friend said "how can you tell if they're happy, they're fish, they don't smile." (he's been keeping fish for about ten years - everything but bettas  ). i always think if they're active fish, (boys) blowing bubblenests and flaring at their neighbors, they're pretty happy. the good idea on here was to ask your parents to get bigger bowls in exchange for chores.

-_-

Um....I honestly have nothing to say. They are MY fish, and I can take care of them how I want to.
If the bowl they are living in is a quarter of a gallon (if might even be more than that, I honestly don't know) then so be it. I cannot get larger bowls/tanks and the petstore said living in that sized bowl is absolutly fine. I understand they would be happy in a larger sized tank.

Oh, and you know what is one of MY pet peeves? When people judge your pet-caring skills.

**Sorry for sounding harsh, and I know your just trying to help but....I was actually quite sad at some of the posts I saw.**

... But.. They're not going to be fine..? Listen, I realize this is alot to deal with, but they're going to suffer from this.
They ARE your fish... That means they rely on you to give them proper housing and care.. And I'm sorry to sound rude.. But you're not.
The pet stores do say that it's fine, but they also sometimes say it's okay to have a male and a female in the same tank, so going by their referral (Not the best idea, considering most pet stores hire anyone who isn't trained/teenagers who don't give a damn/and people who are just generally wrong, is not the way to go.
We've done our best to give you a leg up on what needs to be done, and if you decide to disregard our advice, that's your business. But be ready to deal with the illness/death that will probably ensue for your fish.

I know you are trying to help....and I would move them into bigger tansk but.....*tears form in eyes* I can't! I am not allowed. They are two happy fish as far as i'm concerned.

My parents have told me I cannot get larger tanks for this reason...

~Too hard to clean and chnage water
~Expensive

So I'm sorry if the bowls aren't fit to your needs, but the fish are happy. They blow bubbles and flare at one another.

Petco has 1-1.5 gal bowls for like $10

Um...water changing isn't that hard. If it can be done on a 1/4 gal it can be done on a 1 gal without too much added effort...

Still.....they said no. Ok? Thats that. They won't change their minds. I have a bigger tank (probably 1 gallon or a 1.5 gallon or maybe even larger) but my Dad won't let me use it. It uses TOO much water. Even I have to agree that it does.

As I said, they are two happy fish. I honestly wish that everybody would stick to topic from now on and stop going on about the bowls. I didn't intend for this to happen. :/
