My Possible New Tank

Is that a rio 400? Looks same as mine. Not sure whether to sell or keep my rio 400, stand and equipment when I get my 6 or 8 footer in August?? All down to if the other half lets me have the 2 or not lol I already have a 150 litre turtle tank set up as well and a 30 gal hospital tank

I've no idea if it is rio 400 but it goes well with my jewel 2.5ft tank almost identical so I'm well chuffed

jealous ! im desperate for a 5ft tank as it would fit perfectly in the room at home but havent got lots of money to spend, if i could get one cheaply i could sell my 3ft to cover some of the cost - otherwise its a no goer

If your up for a drive they will prob do a exchange against another tank

so im now looking at getting sand how much do you reckon ill need for it im thinking 35kg is that about right ???

I got a the same tank and used 35 kg of black sand and i wouldn't want it any deeper than what it is. Its deep enough for plants so why have any more lol

So you would you say 30 is more than enough and what sortve filtration are you running I've been looking at some internal filters

2x of these 2200 LPH internals

Will they be able to cope/ be sufficient for this tank as all I've ever had is a external filter so just trying to weigh up my options and try not to dent my poket so much lol

If I had a 7ft tank I'd make the most interesting community tank EVER :p Most of the time would be spent aquascaping that bad boy... to make sure I have at least 2 or 3 slightly different areas in there for different kinds of fish :hyper:

A little more than 30 should be ok. I used 35kg. I don't use internals on any of my tanks. They don't give you the flexibility to add or remove media. Also externals hold a lot more media. The bad part with internal filters is they clog up very quickly and will need a lot of taking apart and cleaning. You can leave an external for months with no problems.

I use 2 tetratec ex1200's. I bought them new and delivered for £89 each and I love them. Great performance and built quality and next to silent. I sold my fluval fx5 for them. They too are rated for tanks of up to 500 litres each with a flow rate of 1200 lph with no media and around 940 lph when the filter is full of media. You get 4 separate trays full of media when you buy it. They also come with spray bars but I don't use them. I leave the spray bar off and just use the elbow for increased water flow :)

I also took out my 2 300 watt internal heaters I was using and changed it for a single hydor 300 watt external heater. These connect straight onto the inlet pipe of the tetratec filter and pump warm water around the tank. Even only using one iv got no cold spots in the tank and the temp is perfect. I paid £32 for the heater. This also means there is less clutter in the tank :)

Shame the OP couldn't get the 7 footer after but still the 5 foot Rio is a great tank. Iv had mine a while now and i love it but i don't know whether to keep it or sell it when I get my 8 footer in August.

I'm not going to be able to get the 7ft tank now but I'm getting a jewel rio 400 which is 5ft.

I've got a few ideas but I'm defenatly going to have a sand base, I've gt loads of rock from the beach with different colours /type and size and I've now ordered loads of plastic plants ( I'm awaiting hate replies) as I like keeping things as simple as I can as no need to over complicate,

I have in mind to have a rocky cave scape on the right of my tank then scape it into a planted area in the centre and moving to the left hand side a flooded forest scape.

What do you guys think ???

Don't quote me on this but I don't think all rocks found on the beach would be suitable to put in a tank...

I'm not sure which are and which aren't or how you check if they are suitable. Just giving you a heads up.

I'm sure there is someone here that can explain for you :)

I was thought as long as it stops letting off gas bubbles ect and had a good old boil wash and a serious scrubbing so they was clean but I could be wrong and I'm always open to suggestions and Being put right as it'll help me improve my fish keeping skills
