It can take quite a while in some cases for the effect on nitrite poisoning to show up in fish, thats why you see posts on here everyday where people have high nitrite readings but there fish seem to be swimming around happily

Today i noticed my mollys were hanging by the filter looking rather unwell...

Explained and the manager came out and confirmed that they had nitrite poisoning.

This was like 2 months ago and ive been learning ever since. My tank is now fully cycled after getting mature filter media.

you`ve come far geoff, mollys are quite sensitive anyway.. in my expereince , either that or im a crap fishkeeper

great news that the store is training its employees, itll probably save loads of fish from having to go thru the same thing

and if anything worries you at all or you have a question, dont let people like that put you off from posting on here, even IF you are in the wrong, the advice will soon set you straight

Oh i disregarded his post anyway... Ive used forums before and you always get people like that whatever the forum.

And to the sensitive mollys thing. I believe that is true as when my tank was cycling, if there was ammonia or nitrite present theyd always go to the front right corner for some reason and always looked happier when id changed the water. Obviously i didnt rely on this and was testing regularly, but it was just something i noticed which the test results agreed with.

I know my tank has cycled as i added mature filter media and had a week of clear results WITH fish in, and daily feeding.

how are they conflicting? he said they had nitrite poisoning, which temporarily damages haemoglobin which will make fish lethargic and hard for them to use oxygen effectively. he said in the first post they are lethargic and hanging around the filter (the symptoms of nitrite poisoning).

in the second post he said it is now cycled...i dont see a problem tbh

What was conflicting?

I set my tank up about 2 months ago, added fish after the first week due to bad advise and me not knowing any better. I came here, got advise on fish-in cycling, kept testing and changing the water using API master test kit. Then after a month i managed to get some mature filter media. Added that and after a couple of days my test results were steady, had a week of clear results. Then i upgraded my filter and had what im guessing was a mini cycle as i transferred all the media but i was told i lost bacteria which was on the filter. Then i had another week of clear results which has just finished. Then yesterday i noticed my fish were showing signs of nitrite poisoning

To play devils advocate I think there are a few conflicting things on this post - especially when you look at the fact that the mollies were confirmed ill with nitrite poisoning today and now the tank is full cycled today

Anyway I guess the good thing is that the tank is cycled now

But i was told by wilder that nitrite poisoning symptoms can become obvious as the tank finishes cycling or a few months after... It finished cycling a week or so ago, Then i had a spike when i upgraded my filter.

I'm inexperienced anyway, the symptoms could have been present at an earlier date to a trained eye... It just happened that i noticed yesterday and it was confirmed today

Edit: Anyway, i have new fish and all seems well. Lets not turn this into a massive debate

I'm glad you got things straightened out. It's too bad you didn't know that starting with mature media would have headed off the problem for your first fish, since your were able to get some. Perhaps some day you will have the opportunity to help another new fishkeeper out by passing along some of yours.

Yeah, lets hope so... Its really not nice watching fish suffer. (ive said it before and ill probably say it again)
