K, so I did a water change today and rearranged stuff. I really like it!
Monday I will be putting the APS EF2000+ on it, with external heater (internal one makes weird noises).
Stock is now:
1 x rotkeil severum
1 x festivum
1 x honduran red point
1 x angelfish
2 x African butterfly cichlids
4 x denisoni barbs
1 x magnum plec
17 x apple snails
Pictures on Monday, once I've not got a house guest
Lfs had some full grown ones in their display tank along with scissors and rainbows I asked if they would be getting any in, he said probably and they'd be about £12-15 each! think I'll buy online again instead!
Minnnt bred that hrp from two hrp parents...so that one I am definitely sure of! But you're right, he doesn't look like one.
Minnt is there 100% no way that some strain of Thoryicthys could have been involved in the spawning process? I just dont understand why there is spangling on them or the blue line in the lateral line or why the stripes are not more prominent or why there is a lateral spot. Its the spangles mainly though as HRPs are not a spangly fish lol.
99.9% sure that the parents are both HRP's, although there was a male Ellioti in the same tank, but neither of the HRP's would let him get anywhere near them.
I have to admit its going to be interesting watching him grow up as I am not convinced that Mrs HRP has not been playing away....
Did you see them lay the eggs? The HRP female and Ellioti could have spawned and once the male HRP saw the female with the eggs his breeding instincts kicked in and chased away the actual father. Surrogacy in cichlids is not uncommon and nearly all Central American cichlids can hybridise - Firemouth x Convicts are quite common so there is no reason HRP x Ellioti could not happen lol...
Sorry to bang on about it but they really do look like Thoryicthys more than Amatilania (spelling).
I shall endeavor to get plenty of pictures of him as he grows I guess all we can do is see what happens. His spangles are beautiful regardless he's got some attitude on him though lol.
Is it possible it's recessive genes from further back? Ie, is it possible that one or two of his grandparents or great-grandparents was not hrp and that's where it's from? I know it's possible in people... just wondering if it is in fish too? (eg. my youngest has curly hair, while the rest of us have poker straight hair - she's got it from my dad...)
oh and, even if he is a mongrel I don't care and no you can't have him back! he's one of the family now!
Erm, anyway, It's so different to what your other tanks are like. But then again i guess that was the idea and is probably a good thing what with the Sev.
