Renovating my 37 gallon with questions & my return to fishforums.

What dither fish do you use? Would Harlequin Rasboras work?

Which is the thing, the rams or the angelfish? For angels, yes, the tall tank is ideal but they may get stressed out as just a pair in a 40 gallon tall. I am planning to grow out the plants into a situation of ample cover on the left-hand side, and a slightly more open fore-mid ground on the right. Rams aren’t my favourite so I wanted to look for alternatives, bolivian rams are nice although I want something unique… I was thinking of the flag acara but am not sure where to get it and I do not know much about the fish.
One tank has 10 n. beckfordi and the other tank has 10 h. erythrozonus. People posted to me that the beckfordi would eat my Apistogramma fry. But I have had 3 serial spawns with greater than 30 juvenile survivors per spawn. More than I can sell or give away. I have no problems with the erythrozonus eating fry either.

Pencilfish as you described, are very peaceful and shouldn’t eat eggs or fry, especially when guarded by spawning apistos.

If I were closer to you, I would purchase from your brood of apistos, shame.

Some of my questions you didn’t answer though:
  • Which one “just might be the thing,” the rams or the angelfish?
  • Would Harlequin Rasboras work as dither fish for my apistos?
  • Do you have ideas for suitable centerpieces that are unique?

Several Apistogramma cognoscenti warned me about beckfordi and fry. But my experience contradicts their advice.

As a rule other than dithers, I have Apistogramma in species only tanks. So I would not have rams or angels too.

I think Harlequins would work but pencils are the classic dither for Apistogramma.

I’m not one for centerpiece fish but a beautiful angel can be a show stopper. But don’t add Apistogramma.
