My Guppy Fry Journal

That was my problem too with my albino cories. At 82 my tetras just got sicker and I had no choice but to raise the temp again, cories are still not very active. My livebearers were the first ones to get better and stay better, you might be ok at 27 for speeding the parasite cycle up, once you medicate to kill the ich. Ich won't die off with just a temp raise at 27 though, I'm sure. Someone will write in here if I'm wrong.

Cories won't like the salt. I half-dosed the medication.

Hi folks, not had an update in a few days, dealing with relationship breakdown at the mo so that's my main concern :(
I have been dosing the tank with 2 tablespoons of salt a day and the heat is turned up.
The guppy fry seemed to have had a growth spurt since the heat was turned up, the cories are out more during the day since adding the salt, they are probably wondering whats going on. How long do I carry on with the salt/heat method? I am quite skeptical towards over the counter meds for fish. When I first set up my aquarium I spent stupid amounts of money on things like gill flukes treatment, general tonic and things like that one of them just turned the tank water bright green for days I can't remember which. I have read a lot online about treating ich and lots of aquarists swear by the heat/salt treatment.
The fish don't have spots I know it says to keep treating 5 days after the last spot has disappeared but none of them have spots. The female who had the spots on her tail seems to have none now
Will the heat make them come out in the spots?

On a different note, I usually sit and watch the fry, I have let them in the main tank as they kept getting out the net and none lost so far, the adults dont bother them. I noticed my only grey coloured fry has a pink shine to him and he has red eyes. Very weird. I checked the rest of them and they are all black but this one had red so it will be interesting what colour he turns out-if he makes it.

Are you dosing salt without water changes?
Salt stays in the water and you need to dose once and than add more only with water changes to the proportion of the water changed.
As for the spots, once they fall off the fish it is then that the ich can be killed so that's why treating after the spots are long gone is the most important stage.
If there are no more spots appearing that's a good sign but it can take from a few days to even a couple of weeks depending on temperature for reinfected fish to show visible signs again.
If the fish are not stressed from the temperature, keep it up for another few days maybe to be sure.

No I do daily water changes to stop them getting stressed. I wondered what happened I was like I definitely saw spots where are they!
I'll keep it up for the time being. Keeps me busy :)

Your cories will not tolerate that temperature very long. They tend to be among the cooler water fish of those that we keep. I would drop the temperature down to 25C or so and allow the salt an extra day to act, otherwise you may not have any cories.

Thanks. I will drop the temp gradually through out the day.
I have now noticed spots on the little frys tails :(
Am I right to do water changes every day? I do about half or should I miss a day then do it?

Oh geez. :-( I hope u get this sorted soon.

I need some help, I put 2 table spoons of salt in my tank on wed I think. On thursday I did a water change to half way then put another tablespoon of salt in. Yesterday I changed the water half way and put another table spoon of salt in-today the same. Am I doing this right?
Thanks

That sounds right to me. I hope someone else pipes in for you though. I really just wrote to be supportive :/ I barely got through this ich stuff and ended up medicating, and my cories are still not doing the best :( I think you will come out of this better then I did.

Thanks for the support, means a lot to me. I have never had this before and i'm scared for all my babies. I'm also scared for my cories and my snails. The cories are zipping about poor things probably wondering what's going on :(
What causes it? I had that awful nitrite spike then my tank was cycled and now this
After the week i've had I really don't need this right now.

The first thing people jump to are water conditions, but My water tested perfect, even had my phosphate tested. I'm sure yours was fine too. Maybe it came with a new guppy? I read it can live in the fishes gills where you can't see any spots. I had put in new tetras the week I it in my tank.

I had the 3 females then one died after having 10 babies, then my friend gave me an endler, but I had 3 males and 2 females so he gave me another female to even everything out that was about 2 weeks ago-and she's the one who had the spots first. Must have been with that then. I told him about it and he's keeping a close eye on his tank.
My water conditions are also perfect.

Maybe she just got stressed with the move and it developed there. I've been seeing debates about whether or not it lays dormant in tanks and then stress brings it out. I wonder more if it's something we introduce, with plants, new fish, etc. But it's really awful to go through, especially when you actually care about your fish.

Yeah it's so worrying and stressful. I also don't know much about ich, there's so much stuff about it online. It ends up being contradicting and confusing.

Thats a problem with a lot of aspects of this hobby I am finding. My lfs doesnt believe in cycling tanks without fish. They told me it was the quick way to get a tank going and that you have to sacrifice some fish to get a tank up and running. I just buy my fish and take off. My local chain store however has some wonderful fish keepers working there and know a lot. But the fish there are always sick or looking awful. SO I can't buy from them :p

I really hope your tank is healed soon. My tank that had ich was contaminated by my apistos that I bought with a pretty nasty internal parasite, so now I have sick fish everywhere too. I had to buy a antibiotic online. Hope it gets here in time.
