My Guppy Fry Journal

Ok so last night my female molly was acting very strange. She looked like she was in distress, she was hovering behind the plants on the sand, anyone who came near her got nipped, she kept swimming backwards every so often and she had that very thin clear poop my females have before they drop. If I didn't know any better I would have said she was in labour. I know she wasn't as it's only been 3 weeks and she's too thin for a start.
She's out from behind the slate and swimming about. She was eating the food this morning so she is fine.
Who knows, in a week or 2 I might be updating I have fry or the worlds fattest molly

I am happy to announce-no more casualties! The fry are getting big, one has a full black tail just like mum and is the biggest so I think she will be female. The others have black markings coming along. I have no idea how old they are maybe 2-3 weeks old. I will get a pic if they stay still lol.

I let my fry out into the main tank since the biggest is the size of a neon tetra. I defo think that one will be female.
They are so cute exploring the tank. Their mum will be ready to drop again in a week or so, she's huge and the yellow female is starting to square up. I have a funny feeling they will drop together or days apart
Can't wait for more fry!

So both my females have had visible birthing tubes for a few days now, I am eagerly waiting for fry, they could come any time now and as I expected they are both going to drop at the same time
My 4 fry are doing great, they are almost 4 weeks old or so, their tails are starting to get a hint of yellow. The male I have from the previous batch is also turning out to be stunning. Dark blue and red body, long red dorsal fin and red tail with black stripes. I seem to have lost my camera, I have been searching for it for days now. Hopefully it will turn up as I have been promising pics for a while now but because of this lost camera i've not been able to. Hopefully will be announcing more fry very soon :)

I've just discovered my half black female is skinny and very faint gravid spot. She has probably had her fry. The thing that really irritates me is I have plants and a cave and wood-and still no survivors? :grr:
The having lots of plants theory must not work with me

well at least your guppies are having babies!!! my v. platies wont. i think i'm going to cheat and buy a gravid female from my lfs - not too gravid i dont want another abortion!!! the fry are probably still hiding from the scary fish.

Aww when I had variatus platies the female didn't get pregnant! My yellow guppy female is still very square and the birthing tube has been visible for about a week. I don't know when she will drop if she is going to.

Hey guys I know there's not been an update for a while but it's been a hectic month!
Firstly I only have one female guppy left and 3 of her babies.
Next I went to a womans house who was advertising endlers and ended up bringing home a fish which she described as a white short finned siamese fighter. I had put a post up in the appropriate section of the forum as I had never heard of such a thing, turns out it's an albino paradise fish.
He seems very placid as he was in with a bunch of endlers. I had put him in the tank thinking I only had the female guppy left-I hadn't seen the babies for days so presumed they had died. A few days after putting them in-they reappeared-very strange. Here they are. I have actually lost count of how old they are but all 3 of them have turned out boys! They must be almost 2 months old now, maybe older. 2 of them are identical in colour, the only way I tell them apart is the bigger one has a longer dorsal fin which is electric blue, with navy spots. The 3rd baby is different but not by much.
The biggest one

I have not read this thread before and just spent about an hour reading the whole 24 pages (I'm the slowest reader that you'll ever meet) :D

Those guppies are absolutely stunning! wow! I never had any luck with guppies. Perfect water stats, cycled tank. Obviously it wasn't good enough! But I' glad you're having so much luck with raising the fry!

I have a lot of luck with platies, got 16 platy fry atm :D

Thanks for taking the time to read my thread.
I know exactly what you mean about having no luck with guppies-neither did I and even now, cycled tank, perfect water stats-there's always something wrong, I am left with a female and 3 babies. The fry usually get to a certain size then die too
Aww platy fry are so cute with their big googly eyes! I had no hassle with platies either, so sturdy and easy to look after! Good luck with your fry :)

Your not the only one, I really really struggle with guppies, platys live fine but very very rarely will they breed, but mollies! I can't stop em, its an endless cycle of fry.

glad you are well. I missed this thread :)

Same as above ;)

Aww thanks, I missed you too. Missed the banter! I'm back now, will be picking up a few more females next week as I have a 1:3 ratio - the wrong way round lol

Aww I love molly fry! They are so cute! They colour up so quickly. Everytime I go to LFS they have little calico or black or orange molly fry. So tiny and coloured up already!

Just a little update. I am actually very surprised at my paradise fish fitting in so well with the guppies. I was trying to get a video of them last night, the cories, guppies and paradise fish were all feeding on the algae wafers together but the cories are so shy any movement by me and they are off!
I did the wrong thing - got the fish first then did the research - always do your research first! To be fair the woman told me it was a white siamese fighter. When I read they are aggressive I started panicking. The first few days he would chase the babies if they got too close. He also kept getting nipped by my female guppy at feeding time so now there's a pecking order. Mum and babies eat first and he's a gent lurks around underneath and takes what falls. I think it just depends what is in your tank and the dynamics of it all. I don't think we should tar all of them with the same brush unless I am just extremely lucky. We will see what happens when the other females are added, don't think there will be a problem as they aren't brightly coloured.
