A sarcastic title to get your attention!

You know, I really think some people in this forum have 'overstocking tourettes syndrome'. The only thing they seem able to say when a person posts that they have a serious fish problem is 'oh but you do know you're overstocked'. Now this would be fine if the overstocking was actually a potential cause of the problem but most times it is not. Why don't the mods clamp down on this kind of pointless response?

I personally feel its slightly pathetic when someone brings in an irrelevant argument which doesn't help solve the given problem but at the same time it would be hard for admins to monitor as no rules of posting are being breeched and therefore the topic would only come to their attention if it was highlighted by a member!

my friend had a cat whos eye exploded... dont think it was overstocking, could be wrong...

Sorry but I think this thread should be locked, this has been said many times, especially by me, we choose to take advice or leave it.
People only say it for the benefit of the fish, they dont say it because they want to try and hurt you....
If you have a problem, pm the mods and talk to them about it.

overstockign is somethign that people new to fishkeeping need to be made aware of. not just for the fish, but to get maximum enjoyment from your tank. my tank is overstocked, but i like to think i know enough, my filter is man enough, and im sensible enough to deal with it.

There's a few issues there.

Some people are just glad of thinking of something to say, whether it's relevant or not. It's an ego thing. Others just want the originator of the post to be fully aware of all problems, for the benefit of the fish.

As in the case you highlight, most people are perfectly able to respond to the irrelevant posts in the way they see fit.

Irritating it may be, but there's not a lot you can do about it.

That's just the point though. They're not saying it for the benefit of the fish as most of the time the (claimed) overstocking is NOT the cause of the problem that's being asked about. You clearly didn't read my first post well enough and consequently I think you're particularly arrogant to ask for the thread to be locked. In fairness, overstocking can be stressful, and you and I both know that stress can lead to other issues. Whether or not it's relevant to the actual request, it's still relevant to the aquarium in question.

You cant stop people from saying things, people can interpret what people say in their own way.
I understand what your saying, And I would of probably agreed with you a few weeks back but I learn to understand now that when theres a problem, people will tell you.
There's no point in beating around the bush.

I think it's perfectly valid to point out to someone that they have an obviously overstocked tank. Even if the problem they are posting with has 'nothing to do with' overstocking - in their eyes anyway - overstocking can cause other problems. Addressing the issue may prevent those others problems occurring.

Normally when people get stroppy about being given advice on something 'irrelevant' to their original question, it's because its touched a nerve and/or they don't want to admit they're doing anything wrong.

How silly to suggest mods clamp down on advice freely given. If you're ever told something you don't want to hear, ignore it and move on.
