Its actually kind of an interesting thought, that of getting them down to true zero and then giving them a consistent little "starvation period," even if it was a little longer than 24 hours since the last pulse. There's no reason of course that our bacteria want to obey some 24 hour clock, that's just us!

Yup
As I may have mentioned I had a mix up with my external filter (bought a totally inadequate tetratec ex600) and with re deliveries and such had to wait just over a month to get my eheim 2215.
During this time I read a large number of logs that use this same method. I read them wherever I could find them Just looking for ways to create a speedy cycle.
And one of the things I noticed was that when the A/N-bacs were allowed to drop to zero and given a period to adjust. Their ability to process down to 0ppm in 12 hours was in most cases almost instant. Perhaps I'm interpreting it wrong. But to me, it always seemed that way.
Whereas those who let it drop to 1/0.something and the re dosed with ammonia went weeks before they achieved processing in under 12 hours. I put the theory into practice and my A-bacs have since processed everything in way under 12 hours. So I guess it can't hurt to try with my N-bacs.
I guess only time will tell
