Mikes 2 Litre Cube - New Begginings...

I just got mine from Wilkinsons, for cheap.

UPDATE

I have finally setup the tank. It was very difficult to plant, but easier than I expected, the rocks were also difficult to position and keep in place. The hairgrass actually pokes out of the tank. The dwarf riccia isn't at its best, but it is improving, hopefully it will become a nice carpet. The Pogostemon helferi is a bit small, so I'm hoping it'll grow out a bit.

There are no pictures yet, I have taken some but can't find the USB. I'm quite pleased with it, but it's not as good as I was hoping it could be, with a bit more growth it should look better.

Cheers,
Mike

posts pics as soon as u can im seriously intriged by this :)

Curses, I have to get me one of these now :X . I just found this thread, and its very interesting, cant wait of for pictures :good:.
Cheers,
I can't think of any animal which would be able to live happily in a tank like this, not just because of its small size but because it has no heater or filterwith high light and daily 50% water changes which would not suite fish, shrimps, snails etc. at all. So I'll just stick to plants.
Mike
Fairy shrimp sound ideal, they would also prevent you from getting any green water, and could look pretty cool in there. Here's an example of a fairy shrimp:

guess who's also got a 2 litre cube :D great thread

Seems this thread has persuaded people to get these cubes!

Starting trends are we? Next thing you know, we'll have a mass of planted shot glasses.

I have one of these too now! :D

Thanks, I didn't think anything could really live in here, but that could be a possibilty, where would I be able to get these cool shrimp.

Sorry for the slow reply, you can buy the eggs from bluebetta.com, you get way more eggs than you need for around £20 shipped if I remember correctly. That particular fairy shrimp from bluebetta.com can grow to slightly bigger than an inch given the right food.
Don't worry about what is says on temperature on that site, I've kept them at 15-21 degrees celcius :good: .

The downside to them is they only live for around 3 months, though some species can live longer and grow bigger.
Other species are easy enough to obtain and grow but you cannot buy pure eggs, you have to buy triops eggs in detritus(£1.75 inc p&p),so they are usually mixed in with daphnia, clam shrimp, seed shrimp and of coarse a few triops (the triops would eat everything in the tank including fairy shrimp and the plants). You can always hatch them in a separate tank and transfer over fairy shrimp though, the baby triops look the same as baby fairy shrimp except they are orange so it's easy to separate them :).

Erm little update...

Basically this little project went wrong. The plants never seemed to grow and it actually didn't look very good. I got frustrated when the rocks and plants I carefully placed were knocked over by my clumsy hand and the actual scape didn't really work. I'm dissapointed, but this isn't the end. I'm planning to do the same thing again, on something a little larger. I think a similar cube about 8 litres is what I'll have, and it will be complete with a filter. It wont eactly be tiny pico tank but more of a small nano tank. I think next time round I'll have a less complex scape with bogwood and moss and perhaps some fair shrimp.

Thanks for the info Threefingers. I will get some of those eggs. They also seem like great live food. I wonder why they aren't as popular as Brine shrimp as these seem easier to hatch?

There wont be an update for a while.

Cheers,
Mike

I use a standard 50 Watt Desklamp on a densly plants 3 gallon tank and it is more than adequate. It is hugely planted and i dont have any problems with algae, just using a sponge filter too. I use duckweed to as its really a fry tank and i have to remove a 2 inch circle of the stuff everyday.

Sorry about this Mike. It seemed really promising. Did you ever get a picture? I think anything less than 5g is considered a pico, but that could be a SW definition, so don't beat yourself up too much.

llj :)
