No bad comes from them, and good does come from them. They eat algae, and waste fishfood in places fish miss, which would otherwise decompose much slower directly into the water column whereas the snails poop in the sand/gravel).
They are great if you have plants, as the plants roots can then recycle the food easily.
They mainly come out at night too, so unless you have loads of organic matter like food or dead plant leaves lying around in your tank that would sustain an huge population, you wont see much of them.
