What is the brown stuff growing on it??

you need to be more specific. there could be millions of "brown things" that could grow out of live rock.

The brown things are most likely algae. It is a nuisance, but it will burn off pretty quickly (after a couple weeks).
Can you try to describe it or post a picture?

i wud say it looks brown, but my girlfriend reckons it looks purple...

Is it growing in hairs (like grass) or does it look more like a sponge?

i had a prob with brown alge when my bulbs went bad. mabie you should make sure you have the right lighting. How old are your bulbs?
