Hello,

I have added a nice lump of lava rock to my tank and I was informed it should lower my ph i.e. make it more acidic. Is this true? And what other effects will it have on my tank?

The reason I want to lower my ph is that my tap water ph is around 8, and I have just checked my tank and its now 8.8, but it might be higher as 8.8 is as high as my testing kit goes.

Thanks in advance

water around volcanoes when they are about to erupt is really low in ph, so it probably will lower it by a bit, probably depends on the water volume of the tank and the size of the rock, also if you have other rocks or stuff that buffers the ph up that high.

Lava rock is quite often a glass-like material which would be inert in itself. Unfortunately it is very porous and it is difficult to predict the effect that trapped materials in those pores will have on your water.
