Does anyone know how regular these filters should/need to be cleaned?

lol not another Juwel filter thread!

i clean my top set every month and my bottom set every other month. (sounds like false teeth doesn't it)

I still use the polishing pads which i rinse every week and change every 2 weeks. I do use the cheaper P@H brand where you get 5 pads for £2.

well its getting to month 3 now with no cleaning being done except for the poly pads... There is too much conflicting info about them, Juwel have a certain time frame (could be a way to make more money), some people say not to bother and some advise to clean but at longer intervals..

Do you just clean yours in some tank water?

yeah, i just use old tank water, you'll know not to use tap water anyways. I always just keep an eye on the flow and when it starts dropping give the media and sponges a clean. Don't do all the sets at the same time though as you'll loose some good bacteria (not much, but some)

there's a guy on ebay selling the poly pads dirt cheap, i got 50 for £5 and they do the job fine.

i didn't clean my old juwel much at all. i think i only rinsed the bottom sponges once in 6 months, and the top maybe 3 times. it depends how gunked up they get though. you shouldn't need to replace anything apart from the poly pad. i'd leave the carbon sponge in so it acts as biomedia, but get another one incase you need to clear up any meds

ok cheers for that.. will grab a carbon sponge as a spare.. and haver a browse on ebay for some poly pads
