so, it’s been said ( those are “dirty” fish ), and require more filtering than some other fish… and obviously the size of the fish, and the stocking level effect the water quality… but I’m wondering how much the diet effects the amount of toxicity the fish add to the water… if a protein food for a carnivore, pollutes the water faster than a vegetarian diet… if the excrement from one fish is more toxic than from another type of fish… yes, I know the water needs changing, just wondering if anyone has noticed the need to be different between different types of fish???

It matters.
A heavy eating waste producing herbivore needs more attention than a lighter eating insectivore, assuming you don't overfeed. It's simply the volume that matters there. Not all stomachs and intestinal systems (if the fish even has a stomach) work equally.

I ignore it totally. I avoid buying waste producers. There will be no goldfish or common plecos here. I feed about 70% live food and am increasing that. I get almost zero mulm. So every week to 10 days, rain or shine, I do my partial water changes in all my tanks for all my fish.
