can u be more specific, musho? Keep both filters for what? I dont want to change the ammo chips every few weeks and stuff, or u ment keep the ols filter workin for 2 weeks like i said above?

Keep the old filter running minus the ammo chips. You will have a spare filter with nitrifying bacteria, which you will need if you have to set up a med or quar tank.

I would leave the floss in the old filter for two weeks, beyond that it sounds like a good plan to me. Don't bother cleaning the old filter until it has run along with the new filter for two weeks.

no such thing as over filtration and its works as a back-up. Just stuff it with sponge or bio-media.

yes there is... i stuck a 20 HOB filter on a 5g just to see how it worked. the water shot around so fast it looked like a toilet.

but thats not overfiltration, thats too much flow.

OK thx for the reply tolak, so i am going to remove the ammo chips from the old filter and ONLY leave the old dirty filter floss in there, so there wil be no chips or anyting like that in the old filter, it will be running just with the old filter floss for 2 weeks and then i will simply remove it becuase well i dont want to be maintaining 2 filters when 1 can do a better job. if i were to leave the old filter in there and not take it out, what maintaince will it need? ill need to change the filter floss every month yea?

Changing the floss once monthly will work fine. Since you will have two filters running they will each only get half as dirty as before. The best way of doing it is alternating filter maintenance, clean one filter one week, another the next, or every two weeks if they aren't that dirty.

i see, that sounds good. and what do u mean clean one filter 1 week? i plan on changing the floss once monthly in the old filter and just washing the sponge from the new filter with aquarium water every month too. that will be good yea? what will happen if i change the floss in the old filter every 2 months? will i start getting some problems in the tank?

btw i have a question regarding my decorations, i only have 2 fake plants and 1 small fish toy that says " no fishing" and i have like a rock thing with fake leaves, when im vacuming the tank gravel if i like move any of these 2 toy decorations i have, there is left over flakes and some poop under these toys, i vacum what i can becuase i cant stand there trying to vacum everything because then the vacum will take out like 50% or more lol and thats not good, so its ok that there is some stuff there in the gravel? i think the new filter will help clean that right?

THe changing of the floss depends on how dirty it gets. Changing it too often won't hurt anything except your wallet, but the price of floss won't break the bank.

If you plan on doing filter maintenance monthly, stagger the maintenance of the filters, cleaning one two weeks different from the other. This will eliminate any chance of cycling problems.

ok thx, and i have 1 more question, when i put a few flakes in there, my fish come right up as they notice it, and take bits at this and then the flakes break and start to sink, my sword fish will then start swimming down and eat the sinking flakes while they are sinking, not all the sinking flakes, so basicaly some flakes are sinking, am i feeding too much or what? i only put like 5 flakes.. btw tolak u would leave the 2 fllters working together yea? i mean for OVER than 2 weeks.. just remove the ammo chips from the old filter and have only the old dirty filter floss be in the old filter, and when should i replace the old dirty floss that is in my old filter? i recon after 2 weeks atleast yea? because right now its dirty, and please tell me, what happens if i forget to change the floss or if it gets too dirty?

Sounds like normal feeding behavior. Only feed what they will eat in a couple of minutes, and it is always better to underfeed than overfeed.

May as well leave both filters running, overfiltration is a good thing. Changing the floss every two weeks sounds good, the only thing that will happen if you go too long between cleanings is that the filter flow slows down, which affects the mechanical filtration more than the bio filtration.

i didnt say i will change the floss from the OLD filter every 2 weeks which is dirty already, regarding the new filter i will simply wash the sponge with aquarium water every month or so, but regarding the old filter which i will still run like u guys told me, FLOSS ONLY, no ammo chips or anything, i will change the floss in that old filter every mont or so too, that will be ok? and for example if i change the floss in the old filter i should wait ATLEAST 2 weeks and only then clean the new filter's sponge too so there are no problems, did i understand that correct? ok so like i said, do i need to get a new filter floss for my old filter now because its really dirty? or i think first i need to wait the first 2 weeks like i said because it has benefitial bacteria , 2 weeks starting tommorow that is because i will install the new filter tommorow, before i install the new filter i will take out the old filter, dump out all the chips and just leave the old dirty filter floss in it for 2 weeks and keep runing the old filter along with my new filer that i will install tommorow, should i change the filter floss in the old filter after these first 2 weeks?
