I want to use java moss to cover the substrate in my aquarium (10 gallon w/ medium-sized gravel). Would it naturally spread out over the aquarium, or would it grow into a ball which I'd need to "train" to spread out?

I read in another thread that someone had used a bit of gravel on top of the moss to keep it in place while it grew.

It should grow fine in sand. I've got some on order atm with a view to planning it in a pure sand base.

I'll try putting some gravel in a nylon and then placing it on the java moss.

i've got java moss growing on sand. All i did was spread some out and then lay some sand on top of it to anchor it down. It's only been about a month and I already had to clear some of the new growth out, so it's growing very well with sand :)
