Had some beautiful tetra fry, just colouring up, (around an inch and a bit long) ready to go to MA in St Albans (for store credit). 12 were ready to go, so I bagged them up and made a shopping list ready so that I didnt buy anything I didnt need.

Handed the fish over - £4..... 4 flippin' Quid. Hours spent tending to them, fry food bought (expensive), extra heater and pump so larger electric bill and all I got was 4 quid for the chuffing effort! Mann was I pi%%ed! (they sell them for £1.99 each!)

That wasnt the only disappointment - I needed new tubes (lighting) for my main tank as they were too old and the plants in my tank were suffering. They were £24 and £29! For a Flora grow and a Tri-colour reflective tube!

bank balance is in pain! If raising tetra fry wasnt fun I think Id give in and simply not bother.

AAGGGHHHH! *breathe...breathe....*

They don't need a 666% margin though...
It seems a bit tight on their end.

Perhaps sell privately in future unless you particularly NEED to move the fry on?

well i guess they are anticipating some to die. you gotta consider that when a fish store buys tetra's or other small fish they buy hundreds in one go. so that same margin will transfer over to any mall fish.

Most LFS will take the fish thinking it's a favout to you hence the low price.... tbh they get there fish for not much more than what they gave you and they also know the source.... i personally think £4 for 12 common tetra's isnt that bad... they may still have to grow them on that little bit more to able to sell.

Think yourself lucky i needed to clear a tank the other day and took 20x 1 inch BN fry to a lfs who i know the owner.... i got £6 store credit... now thats getting very little for fish lol

What sort of Tetra are they and how much are you expecting the receive?

I understand your frustration but like Liam50 said the shop pay tiny amounts compared to what they sell for and so they can't offer much to the customer in way of credit.

You can normally expect to see 1/3 to 1/4 of retail when you sell fish to a shop. That is rather low.

That is pretty bad, but my local maidenhead would'nt give anything to my parents who took a load of fry in. We werent to bothered as we didnt have the time to sell them ourselves.
Oh and you really dont need to spend that sort of money on new tubes, have you been over to lampspecs.co.uk im sure you can find something just as suitable for a fraction of the price. I got 2 new 54W T5's for around £20 delivered. Let us know what size and wattage your tubes are and im sure people here will suggest alternatives. A gro-lux tube will replace the flora gro I would imagine, but im not 100%

My LFS WON'T pay a penny for any fry. They see it as doing you a favour by taking them off your hands, either that or they'll try and sell you another tank.

Mark.

wow, thats insane mate :S

but people buy Guppies etc for pennies so done feel to hard done

although it would **** me off if you spend that much cash on fry food etc and get £4.oo for them

As JenCliBee says, this is normal. Guy came into the LFS the other day with two big beautiful black angelfish that were fighting in his tank. Got £5 for them both, that's £2.50 each. They are selling for £12.50. But to accommodate for those fish it took a lot of time on a busy day moving fish around the shops in bags, and the angelfish had ripped fins from being netted. The angels could have decided to killed other fish in the tank, or introduced a disease which did that. Now consider that if the lfs wanted angelfish in, they could have just asked for some in their next order, paid more for them but not much more, had time to prepare tanks for them in advance, and they would have all come from the same source so could all go in one tank and not infect other fish with any possible pathogen.

Some shops dont even give anything for fish, and some refuse to take in any fish.

The lfs doesnt know what's in your tank, and buying just 12 common tetras is very often more hassle than its worth for the lfs. They can buy them in much larger numbers very cheaply already, and then they have the safety that they all come from the same source.

If your expecting cash from raising fish, stop right there as you wont succeed. Only breed fish on a small scale if you actually enjoy it. So IMO £4 for 12 tetras isnt good, but its certainly not ridiculous. Should have sold them on here :good:.

also with the bulbs, were they T8 or T5? i got my T8's from B&Q and they are just as good :good:

Shame but unfortunatly that happens all to often as they usually know they have you over a barrell. Try if your breeding for a profit to aim for more rare or difficult to breed species that are sort after, its a difficult game that many of us just bred for the pleasure and get abit of money at the end,
