It Simply Sucks!

Thank god for blanking out the words

Are they really necesarry i mean age isnt an issue on this site as it is a family site made for everyone and anyone with an intrest in fish

But any way i'd say thats pretty cheap at £4 but i've also heard alot worse. Fish breeding is more of a hobby i find, my neighbour used to breed oscars and made next to nothing off it, he just enjoyed it, the rarer the fish you breed the more money you will get for them though.

well people are complaining about the P word   so yes its obvious the blanking is needed, the only reason i posted above was to proove a point.

anyways, £4 for 12 fry i would consider quite good!

I had heard that the shop gave a 1/3 of what they could sell the fish on for. So that would have been 66p, basically twice as much as I actually recieved. The lady behind the counter had also asked me "wow - how did you get them to breed" so I did get my hopes up.

Not only that - but most of us are aware that home bred fish are MUCH hardier than farm bred fish. They are able to cope with local water specs and variation therin much more easily too.

I did advertise on this forum - but I guess silvertip tetras have a bad rep as fin-nippers - even tho mine are little softies. Have advertised on "Tropical fishfinder" and will be doing so on aquarist classifieds.

Think yourself lucky i needed to clear a tank the other day and took 20x 1 inch BN fry to a lfs who i know the owner.... i got £6 store credit... now thats getting very little for fish lol

- Oh Jen - That sucks SOOOOO much! They are gonna make a huge profit on those! Its a shame they are so easy to find. Although saying that - there is one of those fish in every tank I know of locally so its not exactly gonna be dificult to sell them.

What sort of Tetra are they and how much are you expecting the receive?

I understand your frustration but like Liam50 said the shop pay tiny amounts compared to what they sell for and so they can't offer much to the customer in way of credit.

hi Timmystood - They are Silvertip's, beautiful little fishies really - and sooo amazingly playful when they have space. I was hoping that as home bred fishies are so much stronger than farmed, and since they had only been bagged for 20 mins so were not "stress heads" that they would give me more for them..... Hufff.

That is pretty bad, but my local maidenhead would'nt give anything to my parents who took a load of fry in. We werent to bothered as we didnt have the time to sell them ourselves.
Oh and you really dont need to spend that sort of money on new tubes, have you been over to lampspecs.co.uk im sure you can find something just as suitable for a fraction of the price. I got 2 new 54W T5's for around £20 delivered. Let us know what size and wattage your tubes are and im sure people here will suggest alternatives. A gro-lux tube will replace the flora gro I would imagine, but im not 100%

I wonder how big your fry were? I had pre-phoned the shop so they knew what was coming in and were able to take them straight away. They had a free tank so jumped at the offer.....

I shall have a look at that website - thanks for the info. The tubes in the hood were the original ones still so at 10 months old they were not showing quality output - half the colour spectrum had gone. So I guess even tho i paid THROUGH THE NOSE

Shame but unfortunatly that happens all to often as they usually know they have you over a barrell. Try if your breeding for a profit to aim for more rare or difficult to breed species that are sort after, its a difficult game that many of us just bred for the pleasure and get abit of money at the end,

It was the fun of the first time try for me Nelly. I wanted to see if I could raise fishies - and it did work and I was ever so proud - but that pride somehow gets melted away when no-one else seems bothered or interested in it (i.e. they will only pay pennies for your hard work)

I am hoping my keyholes will be raising their own young soon, they are forever flirting and cleaning rocks. They aren't exactly hard to find in shops and not the most dificult to breed, but they should fetch a few more pennies.

Id have liked to have at least made enough profit to buy some spare fish food or dechlor from the whole effort - but it looks like thats just not gonna happen. The self sufficiency "Fish" drive continues - maybe when my shrimp population starts to boom I can sell some of them. ...

Thanks all for your kind comments. Im off now to play with liquid nitrogen and make pretty clouds in the Lab. :)

Lovely fish. However, the shop can't sell them in a different tank with a label saying 'hardier than our other stocks'. Therefore, unfortunatly they have to sell them at the same price and can therefore only pay the same amount.
I completely agree with what your saying and have been in the same situation many times before. However, having worked in one for a while I can understand why they offer very little in terms of credit.
Try not to let it bother you much and concentrate on the fun side of breeding instead of the money. Next time, why not try a different LFS and find one that pays you what your worth.
