sometimes i think some people can't be bothered to keep adding ammonia... etc
chlorine will be gone naturally in 24 hours exposed to air. i dont know why people add things to remove it.

i know this isn't a great excuse but you can't really blame a person too much for believing the advice given to them from a source they shouldn't or wouldn't know to question.honestly, most people don't cycle tanks before adding fish because of ignorance.
the vast majority of new fishkeepers who come on here asking for help because they didn't cycle is not through impatience, simply that they didn't know that they should cycle and the fish shop didn't tell them (not that i'm excusing them from doing their own research mind you).
but yeah, it's certainly frustrating staring at the empty tank![]()
they don't sell pure ammonia around me and i've been to every store that even might have it within at least 1 hour of driving time. they only have the stuff with surfactants. so unfortunately i have no choice but to do a fish in cycle if i want a new tank. cloning doesn't seem to work for me so i'm stuck working my a$$ off to keep the fish healthy with an ungodly amout of daily waterchanges and the like.I Think I Know Why People Don't Cycle
because they are lazy or don't have a pushbike
and they want something in their fish tank. They just spent a stack of money on it and would like to see something move in it. Nothing worse than a fish tank full of water and little else.

i totally agree with your statement but there are a few of us that do it well, with little to no risk to the fish
You urinate? No?
You urinate? No?
Try speaking to Steelhealr about what is actually in urine, it is not as good as many believe (if any use at all) in starting a cycle.

Using fish food fouls up the tank and makes it look terrible. not to mention that when i tried it, it started to smell. as for pee...do you eat and drink and breathe non-polluted anything. there is so much crap in everything we eat and drink that our urine probably has a similar chemical make-up of a strong pesticide. so i won't be doing thatthey don't sell pure ammonia around me and i've been to every store that even might have it within at least 1 hour of driving time. they only have the stuff with surfactants. so unfortunately i have no choice but to do a fish in cycle if i want a new tank. cloning doesn't seem to work for me so i'm stuck working my a$$ off to keep the fish healthy with an ungodly amout of daily waterchanges and the like.

.
Use either, I used fish food since, being a girl its kinda hard to whizz in the tank, I suspect urine would be a tad quicker.
Either though will give you ammonia. There is NEVER a need to use fish to cycle a tank. Not ever. Well... until you show me the fish keeper who neither urinates nor keeps fish food in the house...
I clone these days - just plan in advance, run another filter on a running tank, move it to the new tank when yer ready. I keep a small internal in my Vision 260 so that if i need to set up a hospital or quarantine tank I can do so instantly.
I'm sitting here looking at a 200l tank and my little boy keeps asking where the fishes are and can we go fish shop.
My eye keeps getting drawn to it, I've never had this problem before as all other tanks have never been kept in the sitting room.
I know it shouldn't take long to cycle, we have used establishe media out of the other tank but I keep looking, it is so big and so empty with ony 3 little plants sitting in it, I'm off later to get bogwood and the other bits.
