i do regular water changes on all my tanks, syphon out the water, into the kitchen to empty and refill the buckets, adding the required dose of CYCLE declorinate the water
for some reason i just had a glass of water and the clown fish on the bottle attracted my attention, then stood reading the bottle,,, its NOT a bloody declorinator!!!!!!!!!!!
i have been using this all the time i have had fish tanks- 6 months, and have read the bottle before, so why on earth didnt i notice before now

i have just come back from the fish shop and have bought some AQUA PLUS, i cant work out why i thourght the CYCLE was A declorinator, maybe it was recomended for some reason or other

anyway now that i have realised, what should i do now??? its not had a detremental affect on the fish obviously, and i have fry living in the same water( with clorine in it from tap) for 3.5 months

i new i wasnt the sharpest knife in the drawer, but this is taking stupidness to a new level :shout:

surley someone else has made a similar mistake ( if only to make me feel better)

I have seen this before as it is with the tap safe stuff and it is often included in full set up kits it also says that it makes the immediately safe for fish so people think its a dechlorinate. We have some that we got with one of our tanks and until I read it I thought it was a dechlorinate but the number of people I see in pets at home being sold it is shocking.

:fun:

Nope never has happened to me. I generally use pond dechlorinators in bulk though as they are of a much higher concentration, so you can use less, and much cheaper.

im guessing it's a good thing that it was CYCLE but it'd be good to get those fish some proper bacteria build-up. :P
Glad it didn't end up in deaths

yeah you lot are so smart lol :P my water tests have been spot on, but then the tests dont test for chlorine.... would the chlorine dissolve out of the water by itself then? i know some people leave the water to stand overnight before adding it to the tank, for this reason, but would it still dissolve if the water was already in the tank,, and if im paying £9 a bottle for cycle or aqua plus, and it hasnt done any harm thats its not be the right one,, then why do i?????

Yeah, the chlorine would go away in a few hours, even in the tank.

It's the chloramine (or something like that?) which is the "problem".

Personally, I have neve rused dechlor and my waters are perfect and i haven't had ill fish for about 18months (except for a new puffer). So it cant be that important. :good:

im sure aqua plus is a dechlorinater??

there is indeed a lot of debate over weather dechlor is needed at all, the reasoning behind using it is that it can damage your beneficial bacteria. but i know of a few people who have run tanks without dechlor either intentionally or otherwise without any problems (or certainly none that can be easily attributed to the lack of dechlor). for me though i continue to use it, because it's not that expensive, is easy to use and it's just being 'on the safe side' as it were.

If all that is added to your water is straight chlorine, no chloramine, then you can do what used to be the normal thing to do. Let the water sit out in a bucket for 24 hours and then add it to the tank. The chlorine will be dissipated in the 24 hours and the water will be fine. I did it that way for many years until chloramine became more common. Now I'm afraid of it because even if I knew my water supplier was using straight chlorine today, I would not know when they changed over and would lose too many fish. To me the dechlorinator is cheap insurance against that outcome.

hmmm seems to be, but i felt better thinking i was using it, and now i feel a hell of a lot better KNOWING i am indeed using it,albeit a bit late on
