I Have A Suggestion

i remember one of my first questions about guppies and some people treated me like an idiot
little did they know that i had been breeding gups on and off for 24 years and the responses i got from some members were nothing to do with my intial question and ive noticed that it is still happening to people..................Shame on you whoever you are

well in reply to that

it seems to be time to remind people AGAIN

I totally agree with this and the first post. Unfortunately when we join a forum that "newbie" category we get stuck with doesn't do any justice to those of us that are experienced at fishkeeping. I've been keeping and raising fish for the majority of the last 50 years, and If I mention something that doesn't go along with established opinion and the almighty "rules", I've gotten rude treatment from people assuming that I know nothing. Sorry folks - I've probably been keeping fish longer than some of you have been on this earth, and I'm not a newbie or a junior at this. I'll never consider myself an expert though, and I'm always open to learning new things. But, just because we don't follow someones personal guidelines doesn't mean that our fish are suffering or that our tanks are filthy & full of parasites, ammonia, nitrites & nitrates. Rudeness or treating someone like an idiot when you have no idea of their background, or don't agree with the way they do things, is, in my opinion (and I'm as welcome to an opinion as everyone else) just plain inexcusable. I've even seen some people criticize others for spelling errors - correct spelling & grammar are not a sign of intelligence, nor are lousy spelling & grammar an indicator of a lack of it. Lighten up people & try to help others, instead of being so quick to criticize.
thankyou, well said

One thing that has to be taken into consideration (not accusing the last poster btw :) ) is that age and length of time in fishkeeping do not equal more knowledge. I looked after somebody elses tank for quite a while and was doing everything wrong. When i came to do my own tank for the first time, I came here to read more about it. I learnt more in ONE week than i had by having fish in the house for months and months. The are some very knowledgeable young people on here.

People with age and experience should not be offended if another member has presumed that you do not know something that may seem noddy to you. It's better for people to say something you already know rather than not say it if you didn't know. I have seen people get all cocky when a newbie has pointed out the blindingly obvious. As another poster said earlier, just respond with a bit of respect/thought. Emoticons/smilies are your friend when displaying how you are saying something, or things can often be missunderstood.

One thing that this forum does NOT have that I have seen on others is a "report this post" type option (unless im missing it ;-) ) .. that would be one way of keeping things under control.. however, it may be a little bit onerous in the mods.. :(

I think you will find a report post button in the botom left of each post  :good:

I agree with you Squid. Just because someone has kept fish for 100 years is also no indicator that they know what they're doing (but you would sure hope so!). And us oldsters can learn a lot from the younger folks too. I go to these forums to learn, just like the true newbies. And I'll be the first to admit that I do learn new things here - about a lot of things. As fas as a real newbie pointing out the obvious - if it's corrrect then they should be applauded rather than criticized for pointing out what most of us already know - it shows they're learning - which should be the purpose of this and other forums - to teach and assist others (as well as learn ourselves!). I think we all need to keep an open mind and realize that none of us knows everything! And to be open minded enough to realize that we just might be wrong about some things that we always considered ourselves to be "expert" in. And yes - people need to respond with respect & thought.

I agree with a lot of what has been said in the short time since my last post.

Age doesn't mean knowledge, although if someone has been keeping fish alive and well for a long time it does say to me that they know what they are doing.

There are new ways and old ways of doing things and although the new ways of doing things may be the 'standard advice and recommended ways' doesn't always mean they are better ways.

Its more often than not someone who has no knowledge/experience that doesn't like an answer and then comes out with the 15 years a breeder thing that gets the remarks on her, because they leave other threads contradicting their statement elsewhere.

There was a thread in this sectio a few weeks ago moaning about grammar and speech which peed me off a lot, because this is the internet, many different countries post on here, many different levels of education and many different levels of drunkeness. At the end of the day its the fish/plants/Aquariums we are on here for, so agreed with other poster grammar and spelling does not matter one bit.

There is a 'report this user' option -bottom left of each post

Qith this being the internet some people make short sharp and to the point statements, doesn't mean they are being rude, they may use 50 different forums on a lot of different hobbies, and post very quick replies. It is very hard to gauge a persons expression through typed words, especially when it is a to the point post.

Obviously I have far too much time on my hands and don't use that many forums so I don't do sharp short post YAWN.

and again YAWN this subject comes up every week. please just take the advice you trust, ignore the advice you don't, take each post at its merit, and ignore the rude parts of a post (as it may still have vital info in it). You don't have to socialise with the people on here so it doesn't matter if you think they are total *******. so ignore the rude ones, enjoy the pleasant ones, and use the positive and negative advice as you please.

This is why I cant be stuffed coming here as often anymore.
You got to walk on egg shells around here.
And I think some of the rude nasty posts are allowed to get far to mean before anything is done about it.

I so know where your coming from, I came here alot last year then I left and remember just the other week about the place and couldnt remember why i stopped coming. i have no realised why.. wont be long untill i dont come anymore. Also good luck with the birth, not long now eh!

I think another problem is that some days people just aren't in a good mood, and, without meaning to, they take it out on others. This is part of the reason why there's trouble some of the times, I think. I'll see someone post a rude comment, and they'll get yelled at for it, then the next day they'll apologize and everything will be okay again. That's what needs to happen. I think if teh person was just having a bad day, they need to admit it and apologize! Just step back, take a deep breath, and be a bigger person, even if you were a bit rude before.

I hope this makes sense.

Oh, and modaz, how are those dream analyzing's going? :shifty:
