How To Reduce The Noise A Filter Makes

If it's more of a rattling noise, you could try taping down the lid on it. Sometimes my bedroom tank's hang-on-back filter would get pretty loud but this fixed the problem.

its because you air using the air intake. thats creates the bubbles which creates the noise, simply remove the air.

dont the fish need the air in order to breathe...and the filter sounds more like a humm
the filter is fully submerged, with an air intake tube attatched

2 attatchments came with the filter...one to just push water and another to push the water upwards (dont know why you would do that)

Ah simple then - remove the air pipe overnight - this should be fine as long as the filter outlet points up enough to break the surface of the water (to oxygenate it)

Yep got to agree there but instead of taking the pipe off, first see if there's a dial on the end of it to close the valve which will have much the same effect as taking it off but allow you to open it again if need be.

well tbh the best way oxygenating the water is water movement. so removing the air line shouldn't do much. neither of my tanks have air lines or air stones. but i have my fx5 blasting water at the surface creating water agitation which allows oxygen into the water.

Not exactly. The fish don't breathe the air, but the air bubbles aggitate the surface of the water which means that oxygen and carbon dioxide can dissolve into the water well. If there is no surface aggitation then the gas exchange is much less and your fish would be gasping at the surface for oxygen.

My filter has no air inlet at all, just a nozzle which is pointed at the surface - it creates a fairly forceful ripple effect which is enough to airate the water.

It's the surface agitation that's the really important bit not the actual air bubbles, so not using the air inlet overnight won't harm your fish.

ok the the air valve is sorted then...thanks...
but i put a different piece on my filter to just push the water and still i have this annoying humm.
its not too bad but can be annoying if i need to study or sleep...how do i reduce this noise- does anyone have any idea?

you'll get used to it. Honest! Try music to drown it out while studying, really though you should soon get used to the hum.

yea im sure ill get used to it but for the first few months it will be annoying!!!

nah, took me about 1 week you'll be surprised - one day you'll find yourself checking plugs etc to see if it is still running!

yer tbh i don't mind a hum so long as its a constant noise if its like crackling i get really annoyed, i find the timers on my lights the most annoying.

i like the nose of my fillter it helps me get to sleep i get to sleep faster if i have somethink running like a fan or fillter on

true i also prefer a constant humm...but how high do i need to put the filter so that it agitates the water...i will show a pic and tell me if this is high enough...
