In the shops there's usually loads of em in one little tank, if I wanted my tank to have a handful of cories how many guppies could I then put in to max it out to the limit?

Cheers!

30-40 guppies, start with 10 and work up to 30 and if it looks bare, work up to 40 . but 40 max because of bioload

and also a big shoal of cories will look good, but are you new to the hobby? i made the mistake of stocking my hole tank with guppies  and then you see other fish that you want and you cant have them

Siamese flying foxes would love that tank you putting together Mike. Useful algae eaters too and you could easily have 6 in there.

Is that the one in your avitar?

checked the water today, ammonia has almost gone and nitrate/nitrite has hit the roof so added more ammonia :)

in my avatar? or toshapetriji?

in my avatar theres a peppered corydora.
in toshapetrijis avatar there is a betta, which do not make good comunity fish, and should never be mixed with guppies

Progressing well then.

Google for the flying fox, Maidenhead aquatice sell them.

i would only start wth 10, they will breed every 28 days so the numbers will soon rise, check out some of the pinned topics in the livebearers section.

Mic8310, you need to ignore the crowding that you see in the LFS. They have 2 things going that you do not. First is that they will only have those fish in the tank for maybe a week before most are sold and replaced with new fish. That week will be hard on the fish but they can survive it. It is similar to what we end up doing putting 6 fish into a quarantine tank only suitable for 2 of them in the long term. The second thing they have going is that the tank you see is not the water that the fish are in. Usually there is some form of centralized filter system where many tanks are connected together and to a huge filtration volume. That means that the nearly empty tank next to the one you are looking at is part of the same water system and will help dilute the wastes from the heavily populated tank. It also means the tank in the back room also is adding to the total water volume involved.
