How Long Do You Keep Your Fish For?

If you do keep your fish for as long as they will live here is my question. How old is your oldest and what kind of fish is it?

I was wondering what you were taking about on that thread I would only give away a fish if he had a problem with my other fish,I only stated on fish 2 years ago so my oldest is a 2 year old mountain minnow called denny

I started with the intension of keeping my fish - but things do get stale. For example - I used to come on this forum all the time back in 2005/06/07, but this last year or more I've hardly bothered. Now I'm all keen again & raring to go.

The thing I've found with fish keeping is you have an idea of what you think you'd like, but it doesn't always work out that way..

If its harassing the other fish I'd keep the one that was in my tank first n get rid of the newer one.

If i wanna get rid of other fish for some reason, If I can't find a good home for it I'll just keep it and overstock my tank a little, I don't trust pet stores. I overfilter and do 50% weekly water change anyway.

Im fairly new to fishkeeping tho, my oldest fish is only 6 months, 4 female Bettas, still swimming around my 35.

but i keep them for as long as they will live - if there are compatibility issues, id source more equipment to be able to seperate the required parties.

my oldest is my female BN plec i believe, i got it 2 or 3 weeks after i set up my tank, i did a fish in cycle. and i set up my tank in mid august, so ive had it for about 4 and a half months.

My oldest dino the hoplo catfish at 8 years old, my chocolate cichlid is around 2-2.5yrs and my senegal birchir is around 3.5years...

All my other fish are rescue's,being old but not with me,the huge plec vince has been with me around 3yrs+ and the dollar and bala sharks have been with me around two years...

An interesting question. Without wanting to tempt providence (always a risk when talking about the health of fish!) I'll mention my royal plec, who's about 15-16 years old. She's my oldest fish, and the only one I had a friend look after when I went to live in the US. Most of my other fish are ones I've bought since coming back to England, and the oldest of these are coming up to their 5th birthdays, including a few glassfish, some peppered Corydoras, and a couple of South American puffers.

The lifespan for freshwater fish is reasonably well known in many cases. Things like angels can get to about 10 years, neons up to about 5 years, goldfish for up to 30 odd years but more commonly around 20 years if kept properly. I've come across people with bettas that have had their 4th birthdays.

Such is life. I thought I wanted a sorority of female bettas it was not what I thought it would be. My females all died off. I will never do that again.

I should answer my own question. My oldest fish is a female clown pleco she is 3 years old. She is the First fish I got since getting back into the hobby. I was moving around a lot the past 7 years. My first fish being a betta was my oldest fish 6 years old.

I want to keep mine as long as possible, but my policy is the aggressor has to go in those kind of situation. I really want to get to the stage where I have fish that are years old. But if fights become to often etc I have a place that I trust to rehome too.

10-11 year old raphael...I always thought it was younger, until I discovered my mum bought it with my first tank when I was around 5.The poor thing has lived through about 5 cycles, 3 overstocked tanks, but is as strong as ever.

The oldest I've (really was my dad's) had was an 8 year old jewel cichlid (now deceased).
Currently I have a 5 year old Ctenopoma acutirostre, 4 year old senegal bichir, 4 year old african brown knife, 4 year old asian bumble bee catfish...probably more but I can't think of them off the top of my head

I keep my fish until they die. When I set up my new community tank though if I have any agressive fish who want to fish or torment fish they will have to go. My oldest fish is my tiger oscar and he's around 3 or 4.
