I cant find much info on Frontosa, exept they do best in a species tank and will eat anything under 3", but are usually very peaceful for such a large cichlid.

Now I know they are African and usually you cant mix these with SA/CA, but could I have some (1m, 3f) with my large severum? He is unlikely to be in any danger as to be eaten?

Also would Bichirs be ok with them, again far too large to be eaten?

I think I already know the answer to this, but if I dont ask I wont know for sure :)

Hi Minx, I think the main problem with keeping four frontosa is going to be their adult size, which is on a par with oscars,
However IME one should be fine in your setup with the tankmates you have mentioned,

In many larger setups you will find Frontosas successfully mixed with allsorts including large SA cichlids and pretty much anything that they would find too big to eat,
IME they are quite similar to Oscars in many ways (i.e. temperament, intelligence etc) and wouldn't pose a threat to any fish that were too big to swallow.

Many a time I have considered adding a frontosa but I've always had a couple of smaller fish that would be at risk which I couldn't part with

Thanks Davo, I was actually expecting to be told no way it would work, which leaves me with re-homing alot more fish than I already was!!! Thanks for the info, least I can keep my Bichirs and large severum!

I think they would mix pretty well, obviously you have the water requirement stumbling block but considering most of these guys are tank bred over a ton of generations..its no big deal.

my tank ph is 7.6 which the is fine for all of them, will probably rise a little once the wood is removed and replaced with rocks, but the Sev/Bichirs will cope with it fine, the most it reaches is 7.8 from the tap.

Im excited now, rehoming loads of fish to make way for a fronny.

I was going to say Ive heard they are a bit like an African Oscar :)

They are in size and eating habits but they are very different in personality....they tend to be more shy and skittish than the uber confident Oscars and they hide alot....they do however...IMO look alot nicer than Oscars.

I hope it all works out for you Minxy :)

So do I, as Ive just rehomed pretty much all my fish, the rainbows and sharks are going within the next couple of weeks, to leave me with my large red spot seveum, my 2 large Bichirs and ghost knife, cant rehome these, love them too much and have reserved some juvi fronts, some of which will probably need rehoming as grow large, but will give me chance to work out what is what and who gets on with whom as they are only small at the moment. Going to have to rescape the tank - again, but I enjoy that, I was losing all interest in fish and now Im looking forward to a new challenge.

Im sad to see them go, but they have gone to a great home in a lovely large 7ft tank.

ok im officially jealous youve now got a group of my fave fish ever you git!! ive been tempted loads of times by these boys but have resisted so far . all we need now is pics!

How long have you had your other fish for? I am suprised of this huge switch in your stocking. I hope it works out since you had to give away so many for these guys. Good luck.

I love my Frontosa, but he is pretty shy. They grow really slow so no worries on that for a while.
