Help Sex My Firemouths Please

Just because you have a male and female, does not mean compatability....anyhow what other stocking do you have, chances of survival..

You can try preforming a nice waterchange to drop the temp abit, best idea would be start a few weeks with some good feedings,bloodworm/chopped prawns etc to condition them, then preform a few good waterchanges, might stimulate them into thinking times good for breeding, good food and waterchanges recreating what happens in the wild, might work,

Ok just seen you have them alone in a tank, perfect, ok doe what i said, see what occours, if you notice lip locking/digging of pits and cleaning area's then thats a good sign...stick some terracotta flowerpots in there and some nice sized peices of slate...both can be brought at most garden centres...look outside for the slate which is ment for garden decoration, much cheaper than fish shops, i found a huge peice around 1.5foot long by 1foot...which i managed to slice and make two...cost me a couple of quid..

they are not in a tank on there own, they are in with 9 gouramis, 2 clown loaches, 2 silver sharks, 1 albino cory, 1 aquatic frog and 1 common plec

Oh ok just read this on your profile
"clearseal hexagon tank (unsure of volume) currently housing 2 firemouth cichlids "

Well there would not be much of a survival rate if they did breed

Can't wait until you get bored of this place and troll elsewhere, nobody can stand you.
how u managed to interpret that post as a troll ive no idea. though u werent the only person to misinterpret it. it was a facetious response to the OP's comment that his background was "not a cheap 3 pound one"

^^ What size tank are all these fish in... the minimums for a couple of the bigger fish are listed below...
Clown loach - 400l and should be in a larger group than two
Silver sharks (correct name bala shark) - 6ft x 2ft x 2ft roughly 180gal are a shoaling fish and should really be in a larger group.
Common plec - Same as bala shark due to it's large size.

These fish may still be relatively small now but just so you're aware... they will grow or at the very least they will try to grow... I'm not suggesting you go out and get a 400l right away, but think about the correct long term living conditions of the fish and ask yourself if you're able to meet them.

Apart from anything else you will find your firemouths are much more inclined to breed if they don't feel cramped.

i am planning on a 6x2x2 tank in the next few months, got a cheap enough price from poseidons-palace, im not sure about keeping the firemouths tho as i took them from a friend whos tank burst and i not sure i like them attacking my gouramis

No in the long term with keeping the firemouths with the gouramis is probably a bad move. With the firemouths being quite terrortorial and the gouramis being quite slow and delicate.

Thing is the reason they may be attacking the gouramis is because of the space they have/don't have.

I'd give them a chance in a 6fter, or equally move the gouramis over to the 6fter and leave the firemouths where they are. How big is the tank they're in at the mo?

its juwel vision 180 3ft long, i do have an aquastart 500 that i could put the firemouths in on there own but i dont think it is big enough
