Fishyless Cycle Log Take 2

tested at 24 hours & had a reading btween 0.25 - 0ppm ammonia.

So dosed to 4ppm rather than 5ppm

Day 50

0830

12 hours after dose

Ammonia 0.5ppm

24 hours after dose

Ammonia 0ppm

02/01/10

Day 51

1200

15 hours after dose

Ammonia 0.25ppm
Nitrite 0ppm

It now looks like I am prcessing Nitrite realy fast but the A-bacs have slowed down.

But at least I am sort of back on track here.

Will dose a bit early tonight then test for nitrite a couple of hours later to prove I am still making some, although i did have 5ppm nitrite 3 days ago 12 hours after dose so i am confident I am still producing them.

You're really patient, you'll be a great fish keeper, i don't think i can stand waiting 50+ days with my fish tank set and waiting for the cycle and harder for me cause my GF is pushing me to buy fish, i try to convince her about the cycle and everything. Congrats on that.

Hi Tom,
Glad to see things are back on track, looks like your massive water change rattled your A&N bacs.

Hang in there, Keith.

ok, here are my Nitrite readings.

Dosed tank at 1700hrs

1800hrs first test. nitrite oppm

2000hrs second test. 2>5ppm

So there is the proof. I am still producing Nitrites quite nicely & they are being consumed very fast.

Scratching my head about the ammonia tho

lol, you think thats bad? how about a 4 year old daughter saying EVERYDAY "when we gona have fish"

Reading this thread, I really have to admire your dedication and patience, whilst at the same time scream at you "STOP ******* AROUND WITH THE WATER AND PUT SOME ******* FISH IN THE ******* TANK!!".

Seriously though, hang in there. The true spirit of fishless cycling is seeing the job through to the very end.

Ben.

Day 52

14 hours after dose

Ammonia 0ppm :)
Nitrite 0.25ppm :) dropping nicely again
PH 8.2

Tom, I've found that you really can't make assumptions about the nitrate in your tap water by measuring nitrate levels in a tank after a massive water change. It's really rather uncanny the way nitrates can hang with a tank through a massive change, they will often still be there despite a really good gravel clean and full change. Part of the reason is that the nitrates will manage to hang with the filter, I believe and then will show back up in the tank water. So for me it's a bit of a rule to just measure tap water directly, for tap stats.

You are really doing fine and are in to the range now where a less than complete initial stocking would probably go fine without mini-spikes. Whatever you do from here on out should just continue to make the filter more mature.

Terrific news. i think i will test the tapwaters Nitrates straight form the tap then (just for my own curiousity). Then tommorow its plants & if that goes well, maybe some fish the next day.

Tapwater Test results. Straight from the tap

Nitrate 40-80ppm.

well one good thing, with all that nitrate in there i am going to have some very happy plants.
